It's a wonderful shot Adrian, and reinforces the fact that the X-Vario is hard to beat as an all-rounder.

I've tried the Vivid mode and found it a bit too vivid for me, it would be interesting to see this in "Natural" or "Standard" mode, did you try them as well?

One last thing. When you upload, how do you do it? The image attached is quite small, and while you can click on it and see it in all it's glory, some might not.

'Vivid' quite apt name although 'Garish' might be a better fit, especially for the greens.  My X-Vario is usually set to .dng + b&w jpg but when shooting colour jpg's I set them to 'Natural' with contrast, sharpness & saturation set to 'Medium High'.  I find these settings give a quite punchy jpg that can be used straight out of camera.

Hi Gary,

I just put it in my image gallery on this site and then use the My Media button to attach it to the post. Is there some secret setting I've missed? ;)

I didn't take a similar shot with the JPEG settings on "Standard", but as I shoot RAW + JPEG, I'll dig out the DNG version of the shot to see if the "natural" rendering is significantly different.

Keith, I take your point regarding the vivid greens, though they look to me as I remember them. The 'Raffles' sign is in that fluorescent green you can get art card in, and the lighting of the theatre (top centre) is garish - see also the purple lighting from the foyer. The three things in the middle distance are bike racks, I think, and the green stripes on them are of the reflective sort.

Like anything, it's horses for courses, and I'm still fiddling with the camera to determine my favourite set-up, so I'll give yours a try. Many thanks for the comments.

EDIT: Done a quick RAW conversion for comparison.

Adrian,

Like Keith, I was indicating more my own preference for "Natural" as opposed Vivid. Your night shot though is wonderful as is.

Try using the "More Reply Options" with your next post perhaps.

I have a folder on my computer desktop, with the image in there, ready to upload. It is always about or less that 1200 pixels on the long side, and less than 500kb, usually about 400kb.

Use the "Attach Files" button, and navigate to your folder and image. Attach that and then hit "Add Reply". That way the image "should" be larger and not need clicking on to view.
