Sony NEX 7...no comparison

I've seen all the posts about Sony NEX v Leica M9..and after holding one for myself and seeing this video

I cannot see the reason why you would want a Sony NEX over a Leica M9...too many buttons and dials...Leica simple and great images...enough said

Also...why would you buy a camera from someone who makes Hifi equipment ...

The NEX-7 is a great backup with a Leica M adapter. Light, small, long battery life good sensor and a very acceptable/bounce able builtin flash. Other than that I see really no comparison between both. The M9 is a step ahead in final image quality. It is true that the huge price difference does not necessarily justify the quality difference but with all things high-eng a small increase in performance is equal to a huge increase in price.

The NEX-7 although in my opinion not in the league of an M is no slouch as a camera. My problem with it is a slow, poor and sometimes inaccurate autofocus as well as the miserable to mediocre glass available for it. I hope the new "Touit" lenses are better than all the rest of the stuff available right now. If not I have no problem using my Leica glass with it. The results are very acceptable. The sensor is good to excellent with 35mm and upwards and the camera is very versatile.

a slow, poor and sometimes inaccurate focus .........this is what happens to rangefinder exponents as we get older:cool:

:D Yes, was thinking about that the other day. Right now I can brag that I nail 90% (or more) of my shots with the M. But will it last? :o

I assume from these reply's everyone will be selling there Leica's when Sony bring out a new camera then..

Really don't get this forum sometimes...everyone moans about the Leica camera's , does anyone actually use there camera's to take photo's..as all i see is people moaning about megapixels..speed..batteries..iso...your choice to buy..if you don't like it..then sell and buy 3 sony camera's..

Just my opinion as an owner of Modern SLR's and a Leica M9..;)

Well, you have to admit that your rationale: "too many buttons and dials... Leica simple and great images" is pretty weak justification for spending an additional $6,000. It invites these responses.

As one who has taken thousands of images with both the Nex 7 and the M9, I can say they are both very capable cameras which will produce great files. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. As for the buttons and menus... Well you just adapt and soon you don't even notice -really.

I prefer the M9 - usually- but only because I'm a fan of rangefinder shooting. There are many occasions where the Nex is the superior tool.

I have the M9 & Monochrom, and have access to my nephew's NEX-7 with Leica adapter.

The NEX is a really nice camera but the IQ, colour, and image rendering is nowhere near that of the Leica Ms.

Most people here probably find it pretty easy to use buttons swipes, taps etc on smart phones the new cameras are no diffenrent just another way of thinking. Maybe the new technology causes grief to the original poster thus the old ways are easy ways.

I count about the same number.

I find my M8.2 has better files than the NEX-7. Mostly it is the noisy sensor to blame. It's not too bad with Leica glass but suffers with anything shorter than a 35. I suppose the new Zeiss lens will take care of that problem. I would love to get rid of mine - any takers?

I find my NEX 7 image quality to be much better than my M8, and it is especially much less noisy at higher iso. This is, of course, to be expected with a sensor that is five years more current.

Well, if the Leica M is a 991 and the M9 is a 997 and the M8 is a 996 AND the M3 is a Sears Speed Queen washing machine, then the Sony NEX 7 is sorta like an orangutan, a large mostly solitary arboreal ape... I digress, what I mean, should be clear, is that buttons and menus are like apples and oranges and I just don't understand all of this talk about gaffers tape on a perfectly good and new camera that needs no tape what so ever, strange this, unless you just like tape, I guess some seem to not be able to get enough of some things, like horses, for different courses... I read a lot around here about these horses that are for very specific courses, don't quite understand this fixation for horses, and Porsches for that matter, thought it was a camera forum, oh well, giddy-up. I hope this answers the OP's question, I guess you know what I mean...

Edit: Moderators... can we make this a "sticky?" I think it answers a lot of questions that people may have about everything.

Don't confuse high-ISO noise performance with image quality.

It certainly is a factor in image quality. The NEX image quality is superior at base ISO and increasingly so moving up...and no filters needed!

Again the results are hardly surprising when comparing a Kodak sensor from 2006 with a Sony from 2012.

Have you tried one?

Having both Cameras I do not agree for base ISO.

Maybe there are definitions for Image quality on which the statement fits -but not in my defenition.

Much better color out of the box. Much better details and sharpness also the DNG out of the box.

NEX 7 photos needs in almost any case more post processing than Leica M8 photos.

Well... simple answer is that WANT is a thing , BUY is another... :o and about the question of Hifi... I agree it is an important a factor..... Leica/Leitz has a story in optics dating from 1846... but fact is that today a digital camera has inside more technologies in the hands of a Company like Sony than in the heritage of a Company like Leica... :o

(P.S. Your portfolio is very enjoyable !)
