Ecaton Posted June 8, 2013 Share #61 Posted June 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) . . . erm . . . M(240) - It's only slightly bigger than the RX1 and you can also change lenses . . . I can't imagine a backback it won't fit in! My M9 with lens attached does not fit into a coat/jacket pocket, yet the RX1 does. Weight wise, it`s about a 2:1 ratio with a Summicron 35 asph on the Lecia. All in all quite a difference as far as bulk and weight go.

jonoslack Posted June 8, 2013 Author Share #63 Posted June 8, 2013 Ah, but you don't have Jono's coatPete I wear a jacket most of the time - certainly can't fit an RX-1 into that - even an X2 is a squeeze. (just don't mention the GR - eek!) I shouldn't have brought the subject up really - it was the backpack that got me. Personally it seems to me that: 1. if you like a proper mechanical-optical rangefinder then you need an M (of course, you might want an RX-1 as well) 2. if you don't like a proper mechanical-optical rangefinder then an M isn't for you at all. Either / Or seems to be an odd question! all the best
Peter H Posted June 8, 2013 Share #64 Posted June 8, 2013 We'll see what entitles the new camera to be called an M - ........... It isn't called an M is it? Just the MiniiM reference in the advert where other non-M cameras are referred to as Micro- and Nano-Ms, beside their real names, which in the case of the new camera has a question mark by its name. There's nothing to seriously suggest its any type of M variant.
mjh Posted June 8, 2013 Share #65 Posted June 8, 2013 It isn't called an M is it? Indeed Leica doesn’t actually call it an M, tongue-in-cheek classifications on Leica’s website notwithstanding.

I can't imagine a backback it won't fit in! Agreed that the M240 should still fit easily in a backpack, but my RX1 is noticeably lighter and smaller in every dimension than my M9+35/2 ASPH, and it fits in smaller pockets. Hey You Posted June 8, 2013 Share #68 Posted June 8, 2013 It was eloquent that Leica nicknamed the Monochrom "Henri." Now why did they nickname this camera "Paula?"
macjonny1 Posted June 8, 2013 Share #69 Posted June 8, 2013 Nope' date=' it is larger than 1/1.7". The 1" size designation is from the TV industry. See here: How come a 1" sensor is 13.2 x 8.8 mm big? - Photography Stack Exchange Yep I don't know why I thought that thanks for the link
douglasf13 Posted June 8, 2013 Share #70 Posted June 8, 2013 Is that another way of saying that the RX1 is flimsy? Nope. I'd say near M9 build quality. It's just smaller with less moving, mechanical parts. The on/off switch of the RX1 is actually much better than the M9's.
indie Posted June 8, 2013 Share #71 Posted June 8, 2013 It was eloquent that Leica nicknamed the Monochrom "Henri."Now why did they nickname this camera "Paula?" According the the book The Baby Name Personality Survey "PAULA is described as a strong-willed, authoritative woman" And I am thinking that camera is going to need a strong will after what she has been through sight unseen on these forums signed, a strong willed Paula from Detroit

"Leica's website" and "Leica" are different entities? Unrelated? "Tongue-in-cheek" is a euphemism for "simply idiotic" in my opinion.

Surely everyone has got it by now that these ‘Mini M’, ‘Micro M’, and ‘Nano M’ designations should not be taken too seriously and that the new model won’t actually be called ‘Mini M’. It's a coded message - if you own a d-lux or X try this. Grab lens and body very firmly and twist lens clockwise (you have to twist very hard and sharp) Anita it actually comes off to reveal an M mount. It's been there all the time! Ecaton Posted June 9, 2013 Share #77 Posted June 9, 2013 Gentlemen, let me put an end to the debate M9 or RX1. I would like to share a quote from the master himself, which eventually explains the real difference of the two cameras, or better their owners. In his recent "review" of the Nikon Coolpix A the incomparable Ken Rockwell concluded: "The RX-1 is a camera best ignored if you're serious about great photographs. The RX-1 is for people in the small-penis club who can't afford LEICA." Please don`t shoot the messenger. And as an owner of the M9 and RX1 I`m now seriously confused and might need to see my specialist.

Oh we've certainly 'got it' alright. We've got it, seen the camera, laughed at the specs, laughed at the "M" designation, compared it to several year old competition, giggled at the price.... ....ALL before the "Big Reveal" on the 11th. Nice job marketing. They punted it as a 'smaller version of a great thing', when in fact it's a larger version of a not so great thing. They wanted people on the line, gasping on the 11th with excitement. they actually got people shaking their heads and walking away on the 7th at the latest. They used the M moniker which, surprise surprise attracted huge attention from the M market, which is probably not the market which will buy this camera. I can't see it as anything but idiotic. Leica, if you're reading and are wondering why I'm so grumpy. FINALLY SEND ME MY FRIKKIN' M240 AND I MIGHT CALM DOWN!
rramesh Posted June 9, 2013 Share #80 Posted June 9, 2013 You know why they put mirrors in elevators (lifts)? So that you don't feel its moving too slowly. Well the Mini M was just that distraction to keep M240 buyers occupied and not complain about the long wait.
