Rog, you should have your work exhibited. I like this new departure a lot.

Same subject as the one in the last shot. This time I stopped down instead of shooting wide open. The scene was cool, with the garden in deep shadow and the castle lit by the sun. In the picture shot wide open the idea was making everything contrasty to point the eye to the center and bring it all the way up to the castle. In this shot no contrast added and I just left the contrast between the bottom and the top as it is (just added a touch of clarity to make branches and leaves less flat).

I'm not convinced by either shot though. So any suggestion on how to make them look better is more than welcome!

I can’t offer suggestions as to how it may make a picture that pleases you more, but a couple of things I’d play around with would be cropping out the footpath/bridge section at the base of the frame because that kind of gives a false secondary subject- there’s not enough of it to be part of the narrative of the picture and it’s a bit messy. The other thing would be to crop the picture vertically so that you get the castle at the top and lead down through that lovely forest. That way you could lose the house and other extraneous material. It’s a difficult composition though, and difficult tonally, so I’d probably mostly recommend re-visiting with a longer lens, maybe in different lighting conditions, and playing around with tighter crops/tonal composition that way.

That’s a great subject and well worth pursuing- best of luck with it. Please post more pictures if you return to this motif.

Thanks a lot Phil. I'll definitely give it an another shot (no pun intended xD), with a longer lens and in a different light! Tomorrow I also try playing a bit with cropping ;)
