I like film...(open thread)

I am curious to know, those of you who get their scanning done at the lab (as I do), what software do you use for updating metadata(such as date taken, camera details, etc), what you use for renaming (I like my images to tell me, at a glance, what camera and film I used), and what you use for minor corrections, such as cropping.  I have been using a copy of Canon Digital Photo Professional from when I had a Canon DSLR but a new laptop has given me some issues.  Also, I have an option of JPEG and TIFF and have always chosen the former.  Recommendations, again, would be appreciated...

I do my own scanning so this is fwiw. I use Adobe Bridge for image management and have set up various very rudimentary tags for camera, lens, film, push/pull, scanner used, location etc. I don't update any EXIF data because I frankly don't have the time for it. Actually I barely have time to tag images but do it because Flickr reads the tags and automatically adds them which in turn helps me remember what I used and where it was taken.

I have also set up a file naming convention for all my scans which tells me which camera, scanner and film (incl if it was pushed or pulled) was used. This is easy to do in the scanner software (I use Vuescan and Flexcolor) but there is also a batch renaming function in Bridge, which can be used ex post facto if necessary.

For general image-wide corrections (black/white point, contrast, colour, crop, perspective corrections) I use Adobe Camera Raw which I find simple and excellent. In particular it's colour correction is extremely precise. For local edits I use Photoshop.

Regarding file type, if you mean which type you should ask the lab to give you, pick TIFF. It contains a lot more image information. JPEG is a lossy format. That said, TIFF can be a lossy format too, if compression is turned on. Note though that big JPEGs do process very well so it need not be all rubbish to receive such files. And JPEGs open in Adobe Camera Raw, too.

Hope it helps, don't hesitate to ask questions!

Philip

A while back I showed the outside of this structure, the Galleria in central Tbilisi. It is shiny, polished and full of the same shops found everywhere else these days. It also has a really modern multiplex cinema, but unfortunately when I went the audience didn't respect even one of the rules in the Wittertainment Code of Conduct. Luckily the film was Venom, so I didn't miss much :D

The security guards weren't thrilled that I took a few pictures, like the guy down in the right-hand corner :) The place is littered with serious-looking gentlemen without necks wearing black suits. But one only needs fractions of a second haha.

Really very very good Adam! The details are breathtaking! Looking at this photo, I feel like standing at the moment directly under the bridge

Sehr gut Marc. And it complies with Instagram's anti-nipple policy rather nicely too :D

I'm very impressed by the digitised scan though I do see more detail in the hair in the film scan, but that's probably just a setting issue.

Yes, let's call it a political correct portrait!

There is a video doing the rounds of L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat (1896) thats been upscaled to 4K

1896

2020

I took a freeze frame of the original  and compared it with the 2020 version at the 30 second mark.

You can see in this that the digital sharpening has done a great job with all the straight edges, the train doors, the hats, the patterned blouse that the woman is wearing, all look much clearer and with better contrast.
But now look at the face of the child, something which doesnt have any straight edges for the algorithm to grab onto and what you see is a horrorshow!

This is why I still shoot film.

Cool spot! I was there in May 2017. My first trip with the M6 and I was very exited (for the camera, of course, not for Pisa ...)

Thanks a lot Philip.

love this one, Joerg.  The strong diagonal shadow helps create two triangular halves, with the right half being dark and left being light - very nice symmetry

Adam, I really admire your ability to read pictures. Much appreciated.

Thank you, Marc. It was a fantastic Sunday last November. Sunshine and absolute no wind. We enjoyed this day 😊

Yes, cool it is, and having a more than casual interest in things astro, it was a place I had to visit. Been there a few times now.

It should have been a Grateful Dead album cover. Made me think of Wake of the Flood. Nice work, both yours and the painter.

Best,

I actually approached this guy after seeing him and taking this snap to tell him that my high school biology teacher (who was also the basketball coach 😮) used to take me outside of the class and make me get into this position as a way to discipline me.  But he was in the middle of a video call and didn't have time for me 😜
