Technical virtuosity--white shirt, dark skin, and the slightly OOF color field background. And Lofty's gaze, the quiet intensity of knowing observation. It's portraits like this that are important signatures of the observer and the observed. This art portrait with its accessible affecting image, deliberate and well-defined, stands in stark contrast to the "blank" gray color field I posted,  a kind of tabula rasa of nothingness in (no)thing that tries patience and invites dismissal. Looking at Lofty in this photograph flashes me back to Rabbit Proof Fence and Walkabout, two exceptional films dealing with issues of the Australian Aborigine. Serious applause for you, Phil. This is serious work.

A couple of weeks ago, I spent a couple of hours at a photographic event at the local cathedral. To be honest, it was a bit of a learning experience for me. I hadn't shot in low light since I was a teenager and never with the Hasselblad. I made a few mistakes but thoroughly enjoyed myself. So for the next while, I will be shifting from Don Valley images to Sheffield Cathedral. These first ones are of a bass relief (I think that's the term). I'm interested whether anyone prefers the low DOF option...

the first for me, clearly.  It keeps the eyes busy around the frame.  Very nice!

Very lovely, Joachim.  Is this some kind of Lomo film?

Thank you for your kind comment, Christoph. My wife and I were in Arles end-July and some days in August 2019. It wasn't our first visit and it's not going to be the last either. We love the light and ambience there. Look forward to meeting at Arles or any such event in the future...

Best wishes

We were in Arles a week or two earlier. How did you like the exhibitions?

Could have used a better composition with less sky and more beach, but love the picture for its colors:

Thanks Antonio. Yes, a Russian turret finder which I'm pretty sure is a copy of a Zeiss. I use it with the 5cm Summicron too as I like to use a lens hood which I find it gets in the way. The finder has a nice big field of view but perhaps is not seated correctly, most of my shots are tilted in a clockwise direction, the above no exception (i corrected it). I need to test it on a tripod - and the problem could well be my bad posture! 🙂 Lovely portrait of mother and child above and here's to a quick recovery from your surgery!

Well I would go for the first one simply because it lifts out the figure more clearly. It is an example of where the shallow depth of field works in the image's favour I think.

Haha, still that is a pretty good deal for that kit. Yes it is a terrific thing and really useful. I have used it with a 50 Distagon which I didn't like very much and my current 40 CFE for which it was actually developed. With the 40 the field of view is still a relatively wide 56mm. Best of all this thing is so small that I almost always bring it when I travel just to be able to shoot architecture etc.

And, man, you son of a b$tch just cost me $750 with your review of the PC Mutar.  Thanks a lot!!!

Seriously, it's beyond awesome.  I had never know that an upward shift adapter existed with the Hassy system.  It in a way tempts me to swap my SWC for the 40mm so that I can avail myself of this functionality.  Rise and fall are hugely handy with landscapes and cityscapes.  What do people think???? @adan

Really wonderful Joachim. Which film is it?

This is great, I particularly like your choice of a darker exposure instead of the bright show and tell everything that is common with wildlife.

Cool. I'll try to win one online. I have a Soligor 35mm LTM lens I would like to use on a Leica IIIc.
