Many thanks, Mono :)  I see you also took advantage of the beautiful scenery.  Time well spent!  Nice to hear from you and we should catch up and shoot one day this winter.

I walked through the Park that day and saw what you described. And you caught it beautifully as always .

Steve - I agree with Philip and not much to add.  I don't personally find Tri-X grainy and so would guess that something happened along the way in the process that you can alter to get a better result for yourself.

M6 35 f/2 Tri-X 400
Plustek scan, Silverfast 8.1 (histogram normalised then processed further in LR)

I know that I have previously stated my wish to see distinctive grain to distinguish film from digital. Now I'm seeing it in my own work I'm not too sure any longer. Is it permissible to change my mind, :)
In the image that follows it looks as though everything, more or less, has been covered in beach sand. I wonder if my processing technique is incorrect or is it a characteristic of Tri-X 400.

A few images from a roll of Kentmere 400 in an old Nikkormat I was checking out for a local.

Odd looking light leak on the top - wondering if it was my development or the camera. It's not evident on every image on the roll. But possibly on images taken at the same aperture. Ideas?

Otherwise, the camera is working perfectly once I gave it a dusting off.

Looks like you turned on sharpening during scanning. It has to be off, always. Also, easy on the sharpening after resizing. I never use more than 100/0.3 USM. Also, never scan below the scanner's native resolution. It causes grain aliasing.

It's not a light leak. Looks like a development problem – possibly too much agitation.

If the photos have no deep meaning to you, put back in fixer for a minute or two. I resolved a similar issue, although much more severe in my case, in that way.

Best,

Wayne

If the photos are not too meaningful to take a chance with, you could put them back in the fixer for minute or so. I had a similar problem, although more severe, and the fixer worked.

I don't know anything about Silverfast or what you mean by a normalised histogram, but this looks over-processed to me because the highlights in the railing and on the sand are blown and there are dark areas to the right with crushed shadows. Did you try to enhance the railing's shadow? If so, it is probably better to do that locally in Photoshop as pulling the global sliders affects the highlights and shadows too much. That said, this high-key look might be what you were after and if so you definitely did a good job, I think. In any event, unless the negative is too over-exposed it should be possible to retain the grainy structure of Tri-X while keeping a more even tonal balance across the image.

Philip

Thanks Philip. I do believe I've over cocked the processing resulting in an exaggerated shadow and enhanced grain. The negative was over exposed maybe 2 stops (im guessing).

I'm also in the process of trying to get to grips with Silverfast (not the most intuitive of interfaces, I might add) and I think my enthusiasm merged with desperation resulted in a bit of a mess. I'll have another attempt aiming for a flat histogram from the scanner/Silverfast and then post process in LR / SEP.

Thanks Edward, I wasn't aware that sharpening was turned on during scanning, I'll have to check the settings in Silverfast, but I'm more or less certain I applied contrast adjustment and played with shadows (to be honest I can't quite remember without looking at the history in LR, which I will do before reprocessing). I will go more easy on the second attempt.
