There is no hidden T setting....:(:o

So this doesn't actually work? :

I tried what jaapv suggested on my M. The shutter stays open as long as I want...

On "S" it closes the shutter after 60 sec

On self timer (set to 2sec) ... it does not ... :-)

On S you have to keep the shutter button depressed. On the M9/8 you had the function of switching to B and self timer and on release the camera shutter would stay open until you hit it a second time. That is T.

The M has lost that feature.

In both cases it then goes and applies the black frame subtraction (60sec). Where in the "hidden" "T" mode it does something before that which takes approx. the time difference between the time the shutter was open and 60 sec. The display stays black, but the red light is on.

Cheers

Peter

this is great news! can you post any samples of such exposures? How far have you tested it? Have you gone as long as the 240 seconds available with the M9? I was saddened by the apparent limitation to 60 seconds (and less at higher ISO's?) as I also thoroughly enjoy using the full 240 seconds on the M9- and wanted more from this new camera. I was also hoping that they might consider displaying the shutter countdown on the LCD along with aperture dial setting, iso and other basic information. It can be quite hard to adjust the dial on the M9 in the dark with any accuracy and peering through the finder to see how far the exposure has gone can be awkward when the camera is on the ground or similar.

So with a shutter release cable locked, exposures over 60 seconds are possible on the M?

Thanks for the clarification...

but Jaap it sounds like- if I am reading Peter's post correctly- that it has gained another somewhat hidden feature which also acts as a T setting? or am I missing something?

No. sixty seconds at base ISO is the maximum. If I want longer I have to get out the M9.

I tested it. Set my camera to self timer mode and used B speed, but the shutter closed after 60 seconds :( The other annoying thing is the second "black" exposure, which cannot be turned off as well...

Jaap- have you actually read what Peter wrote above? Or are you suggesting he is wrong? I can't think why he would say what he said if it didn't work? he is saying you can do long exposure Over 60 Seconds with the M. Is he wrong or is he right?

did you have self timer set to 2 seconds as Peter stipulated?

II'll reread it and try.

  • 2 weeks later...

Maybe there's a little chance left to achieve unlimited shutter speed... The Leica M FAQ pdf document says:

"The longest exposure time at ISO 200 is 60 seconds; the longest exposure time at ISO PUSH 6400 is eight seconds".

But it says nothing about the "PULL 100" case :) My M is in CLA service in Solms, therefore I can't try it out right now :(

B setting and self timer on 2 sec = an exposure of 1/45th of a second.

What a croc o' !

Set to C and 100 iso, still back to 60 seconds.

What a croc o' !

A quick-fix in the next upgrade to the software? On past form, not a chance. Not difficult, but what the customer wants....... this is Leica after all.

The Nikon recorded some lovely star trails three nights ago of several minutes after I lost my rag with the M and put her back in her box.

Bulb. What a con.

hmmm, i tried what peter said and it didn't work for me either.... I wonder why he said it!! Peter?? WTF??

It is a real shame- I really enjoyed using the M9 up to the full 240 seconds. The more the merrier.

Does anyone think there is any chance that this will ever change with a firmware update? My feeling is NO. Such a shame...

I agree, very disappointing for us low-light/night photographers.

I would assume that the limitation here is not a firmware issue but that the sensor itself cannot be powered for more than 60 sec. I could be wrong though.
