Silver Efex Pro

I received my copy when I bought my Monochrom. Yesterday I got a message that said my trial period was up. I thought to just reenter the license number I received from Leica but I got an error message and it said to call customer support. Has anyone else had this experience?

It sounds like your copy has not been registered with Google who now own the Nik software suite. Once the system has accepted your Leica number, that is it. Otherwise the serial could be circulated ad infinitum.

I had the same problem with LR that I got from Leica. Worked fine on old computer and still does. Downloaded current version and I did not have the registration #.

Apple gave up saying I was not registered when I clearly had a working fully functioning copy . I finally suggested there must a screen in LR that shows the number. AH HA he said and directed me.

I plugged it in and trial went away. He then asked if he could register my copy. I said please do.

I had weeks of trouble getting my M9 to register. All I can say I now understand why Leica firmware is 4 generations back. Their programer must have gone to school in 1925. They clearly need an upgrade to that portion of the business.

Mine finally works again after calling Nik. The issue was with Photoshop. I run Silver Efex as a stand along program but cannot for the life of me figure out how to actually load a photo into it. I did it once and do not know how I did it that time. Oh well...!!

I wouldn't worry too much - if you have Photoshop CS use that, it can do a super job on B &W when you learn how,I use it almost exclusively now; the only time I revert to NIK is for a red filter effect which can be stronger in Nik than PS but since you're using mono files that's not an issue.

Perhaps you could re-install it as a Photoshop plugin, it does work very well that way.

I had the same problem. I simply downloaded/installed it again from the website without deleting the older installation (although Nik did detect it) and lo and behold - the plugin was there.

To use Silver Efex as stand alone just drag an image file on top of the SFX icon on your desktop /filemanager/finder. Alternatively you can right click on the image file, select 'open with' and navigate to the SFX program.

This should work for Mac & Windows

Thanks, that works. I have tried to reinstall as a plugin but that does not seem to work.

Would one of you SFX users be able to tell me: can SFX Pro be used within Lightroom (i.e. so the adjustments are captured in the list of LR adjustments) or does it require an export/modify/re-import e.g. TIFF. What workflow do you use?

Thanks

I haveSFX as a plug-in to both Lightroom and Photoshop, and PS as a Plug-in to LR as well as stand-alone.

In LR, go to "Photo", "Edit in" and select SFX, then when you're happy with it, "save" and it automatically saves the adjusted version alongside the original in LR. And there are plenty of ways to adapt the workflow if a different methodology suits you better, for example you can whip the original file into SFX or a LR-adjusted file, which is extremely helpful

Robert, effectively a tiff version of the raw file is exported for processing in Nik, or PS or other plug-ins and then a saved version joins the others in Lightroom. So only that version will have the Nik treatment applied in your example. I don't think it brings with it the historical record of external processing, on the scale of that applied by the Develop module in LR. The beauty of LR is that different versions of a selected file can remain for further processing or output as desired in the future.
