Hello to all,

I have been using a Leica X2 for a few months...I love it.....simply love it.

Now I'm looking to replace an old pocket Nikon that my wife uses. I am hoping this crowd and convince me to buy the Dlux6 over the Panasonic LX7 or the very complected SonyRX100.

I'm all about travel photography ,design and quality and a couple hundred bucks wont break me. But I don't want to through the money away. Does Leica tweak anything to make the D6 there's?

I'm hoping you will tell me something that will clinch if for me

....can you help.....I already have Lightroom 4

Thanks,

Evan

PS did I say I need it for a one month trip to Paris.

I've used a d-lux 4 over several years for travelling and it's been fantastic, of course the 6 has a faster lens and much improved focal length at the long end. I'm not sure though that I'd pay extra over the Panasonic knowIng what I know now. That said, the much bigger sensor in the Sony would sway my decision. Leica need to catch up and produce something with a bigger sensor and zoom. I'm sure that you'll be happy with any of your 3 nominations, and there's a very nice Gariz case available for the Sony . Good luck

I've got the D-lux 6 and I don't regret a simgle moment that I sold all my Canon gear to buy that camera. If you've got the X2 then I think the DL6 is a good compliment to that. You get the zoom that you don't have on the X2 and you get the scenes.

I've got the Leica DLX 6 & considered the Panasonic. Bought the Leica because I found a used/like new one at a cheaper price. That made the decision easier. Since I bought it with the original box & documentation, i was able to register it w/Leica, download Lightoom 4 (which I didn't have) and, presumably, also have the original warrantee as well. If I hadn't been able to do all that, I would have bought the Panny. I can't tell the difference and the superb lens is clearly the same.

The D-Lux 6 is a bitchin' little camera. The images rock, and though I haven't compared them side by side with the LX-7's, I have had other Panasonic cameras, they don't compare with Leica. Save cash by buying Panasonic aftermarket accessories, but buy the Leica camera.

It's identical to the Panasonic version. You may be suffering from 'Leica glow' :)

For the sake of academics, or the like, when people say that they are identical, are these people someone "in the know?" Are they just reading brochures? Or do they work in the industry and know for sure. It's just uncanny that the Leica images are better. I've read of blind studies done where Leica and Panasonic clone images are displayed side by side and people select the Leica images to a significant degree (and no, I don't have the footnotes in front of me; just something that I've read in the past). ANd why so many Leica haters on this site? Isn't there a Panasonic forum out there somewhere?

I'm not a Leica hater, I've been using them since I was 18. But I am a realist.

The Leica Dlux6 and it's Panasonic sibling are made by the same people in the same factory from the same components (inside) including the same sensor, same lens. The Leica has a slightly different body style and comes with a better 'pack' i.e. post processing software, warranty.

If you use both versions together you won't be able to see any difference in the quality of the results. Why should you?

That doesn't mean your Leica version is any less good by the way.

We should put this subject to rest, Amen! Buy the one you can afford because no matter what you buy you will not be Ansel Adam II. I have the DL6 and I am a "Happy Camper". Only shoot jpeg and files and satisfying my taste. If you can not see the difference between the LX vs. the DL6 the you should hone your eyesight for bokeh.

Not sure I understand you. Bokeh is a product of the lens design.

The lens on the Dlux is the same as the lens on the Panasonic.

I shall say this slowly.

The. Innards. And. The. Lens. Are. Identical. The. Results. Are. Identical.

I have had Panasonics and Leicas (LX and D-Lux) and can tell you that the results are the same. The practical differences are 1. Bundled software - Leica wins. 2. Price - Panasonic wins. 3. Warranty - varies worldwide but Leica generally better. 4. Optional grip - Leica wins if you have big hands - exactly why I had a D- Lux 4... Resale value - Leica wins.

So. You pay less up front for a Panasonic, or more for a Leica. You get more back on the Leica in time hence the TCO is lower.

But the images are the same.

"Leica hater"...? I started the D-Lux, Barnack, and One Challenges...

Regards,

Bill

As far as I understand, the in-camera software used in the leica version is different. This will only show if you compare jpgs of panasonic and leica. RAW shooters shouldn't see any difference in image quality.

So those who claim that the leica gives better results most probably don't shoot RAW.

but the key difference to me is design. The Panasonic looks like any other point & shoot; gadgety with that stuck on grip that is really unnecessary. The Leica, like most Leicas, is a piece of industrial art. The D-Lux 6 looks lean, spare and unconsumer-like. Most people really don't care about the look of their camera; I do. You already have Lightroom, so there is no issue there. I decided that the design was important to me, so much so that I also bought the beautiful Leica case for it. That's it.

The Leica version looks a lot better than the Panasonic version. Other than that they are the same camera but it was reason enough for me to buy the Leica. The Sony comes close and today I would at least have considered it.

But I am very happy with the D-Lux 6 for a take-everywhere camera.

I shall say this quickly: does anyone have anything more than subjective opinion in this whole matter? Are those that feel that they are 100% the same have some insider information? Because the anecdotal evidence that I have seen would say that something is different in image quality. We've heard different computer processing, different lens tolerances, etc. But panasonic labeled camera's images don't seem to have the color definition and overall character of the Leicas. Until the personnel from the Panasonic plant wade into the fray, this is just a "taste great, less filling" argument.
