MRJohn Posted April 11, 2013 Author Share #41 Posted April 11, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks all, seems the majority recommendation goes toward the Noctilux. With some suggesting the Summilux or a Monochrome as an alternative.
Advertisement Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Hi MRJohn, Take a look here Where to invest, new M240 or used Noctilux 0.95?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
onaujee Posted April 11, 2013 Share #42 Posted April 11, 2013 Go for the Noctilux, you will not regret it...
MirekE Posted April 11, 2013 Share #43 Posted April 11, 2013 M will improve performance of all your existing lenses (better corner resolution, better focusing accuracy, possibility to use shorter exposure times, better image review). Noctilux won't. I would get an M and trade the M9 in for a Summilux 50.

Noctilux won't. I would get an M and trade the M9 in for a Summilux 50. I wouldn't even consider doing that until Leica has fixed the extremely poor color profile / accuracy of the M240. It is really really bad. Join the "Leica M Type 240 User Group (Leica M10)" user group on facebook for very many examples, tests, comparisons, etc. Everyone pretty much agrees that the color reproduction of the M240 is horrible. It will hopefully be fixed by Leica ASAP with a firmware update.
Ulev Posted April 12, 2013 Share #45 Posted April 12, 2013 How about NOT spending any money !? The question is, do you feel "limited" or is it more gear lust ? There are great shots out there, to be captured with the gear you own for the moment. Off course, if you HAVE to spend money and you can buy quality glass AND the price is (more than) right ... you better spend it this way. But make sure you don't miss out on things you can't afford when buying such glass ( your portfolio will shine far more with M9 + summilux pictures taken in Cuba, India ... than noctilux ones in your backyard !) MarkP Posted April 12, 2013 Share #46 Posted April 12, 2013 Ulev, Don't you know that GAS is only relieved by retail therapy. This is a perfect example of tachyphylaxis - a progressive decrease in therapeutic effect requiring larger doses of therapy (ie spending more and more money on Leica) to achieve the same, or a diminishing effect. Hence the Noctilux craving.
tmldds Posted April 13, 2013 Share #47 Posted April 13, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) There are cameras that can give result comparable to photos taken with an "M." However, the Nocti stands on its own!
NZDavid Posted April 13, 2013 Share #48 Posted April 13, 2013 The Noctilux seems to have lots of fans, but the point was raised before about size and weight (less than a DSLR kit, obviously, but still). Why not compare it with a Summilux?Would a Zeiss Sonnar 1.5/50 or Voigtländer 1.1/50 Nokton also be worth considering?
MRJohn Posted April 13, 2013 Author Share #49 Posted April 13, 2013 Ulev, Don't you know that GAS is only relieved by retail therapy. This is a perfect example of tachyphylaxis - a progressive decrease in therapeutic effect requiring larger doses of therapy (ie spending more and more money on Leica) to achieve the same, or a diminishing effect. Hence the Noctilux craving. Leica definately causes addiction if you are not careful. I was completely off Leica for a few years and on Nikon. But nothing beats the satisfaction you get from Leica. Desensitization is usually managed/overcome by Leica through releasing new lenses or new bodies which either let you break through tachyphylaxis via a higher dose of a lens (like a Noctilux) or by adding new lenses every once in a while. Unfortunately, cheap generics (e.g. Voigtländer) don't seem to be good substitutes. This is why Leica should be by prescription only and the government needs to look into this. MRJohn Posted April 13, 2013 Author Share #53 Posted April 13, 2013 How about NOT spending any money !? The question is, do you feel "limited" or is it more gear lust ? There are great shots out there, to be captured with the gear you own for the moment. Off course, if you HAVE to spend money and you can buy quality glass AND the price is (more than) right ... you better spend it this way. But make sure you don't miss out on things you can't afford when buying such glass ( your portfolio will shine far more with M9 + summilux pictures taken in Cuba, India ... than noctilux ones in your backyard !) The question orginated via perceived limitations in the low-light performance with my current setup (M9 and Summicron). This setup is perfect for me in 90% of situations (provided the guy behind the lens gets it right). However, in 10% of situations I wish I had a faster lens or better ISO performance. But yes, one should try to be happy with 90%. Now the Summilux would be a compromise as it would only give me one stop extra. It wouldn't justify the investment. The Noct would overcome the limitation pretty much. Sounds weird I know, but compromises cost a lot of money in the long term. I do not want to end up with a lux and a noct at some point. If you go to Flickr and search for Noctilux, Summilux and Summicron shots, in normal light, I bet most people wouldn't be able to tell the lens if they did a blinded review. For low-light shots this is different as nobody would put a bad Summicron shot on the web. I am not looking for a different look such as the Noctilook, but for something which overcomes the low-light limitations without depreciating too much in value (should I get buyers remorse). So it is the Noct (or M), or I stay with my current setup. I got great advice through some of the posts.
Trilogy Posted April 13, 2013 Share #54 Posted April 13, 2013 The lens might me the greater step "photographically". I wish I'd own a .95. Must be wonderful. The possibilities... but I decided to upgrade my M9 to an M. After having also upgraded to an M9 from my M8, I must say it's a more relevant step. I know, I know, most people *love* their M9. So did I. And it was so much better than the M8. But really, the M is a huge step again.
ShotCapture Posted April 17, 2013 Share #55 Posted April 17, 2013 For me, my 0.95 is very big & heavy, and the DOF to shallow for the up close photography I love to do. When I street shoot photos of people, I talk to then & then photograpph up close, & I end up with to much out of focus. I find, for me, the subject(s) need to be further away to effectively use the DOF to isolate a part of the photo. Finding the exact point of focus, (i.e. eyes) is slow, especially if you quickly decide you need both eyes, or all 4 eyes for a couple, in focus. There are some great 0.95 shots to be had, but I'd go for the M.
sarav Posted April 17, 2013 Share #56 Posted April 17, 2013 To me 50mm lens is not so confortable as a 35 but recently I bought the 50/0.95 and I discovered an amazing allrounder lens. It's clinical if you need it clinical, it's "psychological" if you need it in that way, it's a 50mm which doesn't seem a 50mm: @0.95 or @1.2 it has a medium-length lens effect but with a wider angle. SIMPLY AWESOME!!! I dont't speak about colours, rendering, bokeh etc. nowadays everybody knows it's a unique and fantastic lens. At night (like its name suggests) it's unbelievable. Get it and enjoy it! Sara P.S. M-type240 does make movies.....to me it's not a Leica. Since 1913 Leica is the Symbol and synonym of photography. I hope for an upcoming M241 without movies functions, mic and other similar amenities.
Dirk Mandeville Posted April 17, 2013 Share #57 Posted April 17, 2013 P.S. M-type240 does make movies.....to me it's not a Leica. Since 1913 Leica is the Symbol and synonym of photography. I hope for an upcoming M241 without movies functions, mic and other similar amenities. Guess what? It still takes pictures! That's right. Just because they added a feature that you don't wish to use doesn't make it any less of a camera. It is still a Leica and it still takes pictures. Your statement is kind of like saying the M8 and M9 aren't really Leica's, because they can't shoot film, and for forever Leica cameras have been the "symbol and synonym" of film photography. Hello Dirk, you're right, the show must go on, in fact I consider M9 one of the best Leica ever albeit I'm still in love with film. Fact is that I couldn't take pictures with a Leica camera which has movie abilities. I love movies, I love cinemas, I love taking pictures and printing them but I don't like multifunction tools, to me photography and movies need specific tools. I won't be surprised if in the near future Mr. Kaufmann will present a digital M-P with pictures-only functionality, maybe in a limited edition :-) Bye, Sara.
