Gary Clennan Posted May 15, 2013 Share #301 Posted May 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mine took six days from the time they received it at Solms. Now they are "awaiting customs clearance" before shipping it out to Leica NJ (and onto Canada). I always thought the customs clearance activity happened after they shipped the goods.... johnbuckley Posted May 24, 2013 Share #303 Posted May 24, 2013 Sent my M from Pennsylvania on April 29th received it back today. I shipped mine to NJ the same day. Have not yet received it back. Did you get a UPS email in advance of them getting it back to you? Curious to understand why I haven't gotten mine back yet, as it was listed on the website as having had the work completed on May 13th. Many thanks. johnbuckley Posted May 24, 2013 Share #304 Posted May 24, 2013 Just talked to Leica NJ. They are shipping it to me today. I'll miss having it for the Memorial Day weekend. When I get it Tuesday, it will have been four weeks since they received it from me in NJ, and two weeks since it was listed as fixed in Solms. I realize they are trying, and that US Customs accounts for some part of that delay. But, that's not fast turnaround. It is annoyingly slow.
Gary Clennan Posted May 24, 2013 Share #305 Posted May 24, 2013 I just went through this process and it was not as quick as I thought it may be. Once it arrived in NJ, it took approximately 2 days for it to get from the receiving area into a technician. They then check to make sure all the work was done by Solms, give the sensor a quick clean, re-package it up with a book and mail it out. Be sure to get the UPS tracking number upon shipment. Leica NJ shipped mine via overnight service (at no extra cost) as I needed it right away. Not sure why it couldn't have been shipped direct from Solms to my home but that is beside the point. The gals at Leica NJ did a great job and provided super quick correspondence with me. I feel the turnaround was as quick as it could have been considering the circumstances. marknorton Posted May 25, 2013 Share #306 Posted May 25, 2013 A bit of a close shave... I returned my camera and specifically asked Leica to contact me before returning the camera as I was going to be away. They didn't and sent it back by UPS anyway. The UPS tracking status showed "delivered" but there was no information as to where it had been left. I asked a friend to go round to try to find it. Nothing. It turns out the UPS driver had indeed put it somewhere where no one would look for it - in a wheelie bin, ready to be put out on Monday by my gardener for collection. Had I not come home this weekend and found the card telling me where it was, the camera would have gone into landfill after being compacted in the dust-cart. It doesn't look like they've done anything to the camera, still the less than perfect fit around the top left hand side of the display. Still, I got the book and I'll be keeping the nice foam lined shipping box ready for its next trip to Solms. It's averaging 0.67 trips per month at the moment. Edit: I tell a lie. They have actually done something to the camera. They have wrecked the rangefinder adjustment screw again and attempted to cover up their cack-handedness with some rather shinier than I would like black paint. They really are completely hopeless - the part and the method of access to it are not fit for purpose.

They have wrecked the rangefinder adjustment screw again and attempted to cover up their cack-handedness with some rather shinier than I would like black paint. They really are completely hopeless. Mark, I sympathise with the mangling of your M240 RF screw. Leica have mangled both my M8 and M9 RF linkage elbow screws during visits to Solms for RF adjustment. Cannot somebody bring Leica at least to about halfway through the 20th century and explain hex, torx and other socket screws to them. Cheese head screws in precision locations, where they need to be undone for adjustment purposes, should be consigned to the engineering dustbin of history. This is particularly important where there is no head-on access to the screw slot, as in the M9 and 240. It is a sad reflection of a sloppy engineering attitude, that Leica continue to use this inadequate screw in a location where they must be wholly aware of its unsuitability and the ready availability of a superior product at a tiny additional cost. Wilson PS I hope (probably in vain) that they don't do this to mine which at Solms at the moment.
marknorton Posted May 25, 2013 Share #308 Posted May 25, 2013 So this is what the top of the lens throat of my camera looks like now after being messed around with in Solms... wlaidlaw Posted May 25, 2013 Share #309 Posted May 25, 2013 Mark, What really worries me is the small pieces of steel swarf hanging off the mangled screw (my M9 is maybe even worse than your 240). They would make a very unlovely scratch if they dropped onto the sensor and then got wet wiped across it. They would also not do a lot of good dropped into the shutter motor. AlanJW Posted May 25, 2013 Share #310 Posted May 25, 2013 Mark, I think this is pretty outrageous and you should send the photos to Solms and ask for a new camera. Then they should hang the photo in the repair shop as a reminder of what not to do. The technician who tried to cover up with paint should be fired. Unless he was instructed to do so, in which case his supervisor should be fired.

Remind me' date=' how much did this camera cost? <img src="http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=378281"/>[/quote'] Is the slot mangled or is that just a ham-handed attempt to use a thread locking compound? wlaidlaw Posted May 25, 2013 Share #312 Posted May 25, 2013 Is the slot mangled or is that just a ham-handed attempt to use a thread locking compound? Dante Dante, On the assumption that Mark's screw is the same as my M9, it looks like some cack handed gorilla has used totally the wrong tool and allowed it to slip out of the groove a number of times. The groove is all chewed up with small whiskers of steel swarf hanging off. The other worrying issue is how dirty the sensors have been on all my camera returns from Solms. It would seem that these cameras are being repaired in far from clean room conditions. Wilson
lct Posted May 25, 2013 Share #313 Posted May 25, 2013 ...The technician who tried to cover up with paint should be fired... Leica would probably lose their case vs the technician then as new screws (at least mine) are covered with glossy black paint as well.
marknorton Posted May 25, 2013 Share #314 Posted May 25, 2013 So are we saying this is the way it is with new cameras? Maybe they decided to put on a dollop of paint or thread locking compound to seal the screws to prevent the alignment going off. For those of you who have had cameras back, what does yours look like? If you think about the song-and-dance they make about painting the edges of lens elements, you'd think they'd want to strive for the same quality here. Apparently not. k-hawinkler Posted May 25, 2013 Share #315 Posted May 25, 2013 Mark, Very disappointing indeed! Lack of attentiom to detail on Leica's part is really inexcusable. I think I'll prefer to wait longer for my M240 and see whether Leica can successfully address the multitude of annoying problems of that camera. Good luck getting yours successfully repaired. It looks like their is some job sharing going on between the builders on the new factory and the repair department. Seriously wether or not the working of the camera is effected does not matter,at £5,500 each it is pretty poor workmanship. BrianP
george + Posted May 25, 2013 Share #319 Posted May 25, 2013 So, what is your concensus? My lugs feel solid. Should I wait or bite the bullet? FYI my very early M8 is untouched and works just fine.
marknorton Posted May 25, 2013 Share #320 Posted May 25, 2013 I have 5 Digital M cameras, two M8s, an M9, M9-P and an M Typ 240 and it's only the new camera which looks like this.
