Leica M strap lugs unscrewing (merged)

But this has happened before, on the M9 and X1, so it's not a problem 'unique' to the new M.

I wonder why they didn't do a recall before? I can only assume that those were isolated cases and perhaps they've had a sudden flurry of reports of the M failing?

Maybe it's all those long, heavy R lenses :)

Carrying around the M with the 28-85 Vario Sonnar on it, I will never need to go to the gym.

Alan,

Since I cannot see the necessity to remove these at any time in the future, I would use the high strength red 270 rather than blue.

I am with you on this but sometimes a lug needs replacement. I presume one can heat up the red 270 or use a solvent to unstick it if necessary though. (This is beyond my knowledge as I only use the blue.)

Alan,

Either heat or acetone will soften 270.

Yea the M240+ Noctilux could be a weapon. It feels heavier than the 5DIII + 50 1.2, but its not. At 2.75lbs though it defiantly a workout.

A mere featherweight :) The M240 and Vario Sonnar 28-85 is 3lbs 10.75oz. It is a big lens with 16 elements in it and an 82mm filter thread.

HI Mark

Me too, I had the WATE as well, it's still one of my favorite lenses.

Don't imagine your low serial number is immune though - I have 444432x, and mine has to go back as well (for checking).

I'm not in a hurry though - It all seems to be as tight as a tick, so I'll wait until the initial rush is over.

all the best

Jono-Mine feels very firm and is about 4 dozen behind yours, but I have been mostly using tripod and R lens with their tripod supports so no loose feeling. I actually like having a friend with me that also has loose screws. Makes me feel normal.

I don't think this is right, at least not in the US. There is a Leica Store in DC, where I live, but I was instructed to contact New Jersey.

The store called me to alert me to the situation. I had already heard about it but the gesture was very much appreciated. I will wait for the initial rush as I have travels planned for the next month and beyond, but one trip is a Monochrom trip only so I'm OK.

i build quadcopter flying camera platforms and put blue Loctite on every screw.

Loctite is amazing. Blue is tolerant of vibration, holding true but can be decoupled with reasonable steady torque. I would choose Red for the Leica lugs but I suspect the real problem to be short fasteners.

BTW - I was asked to do an aerial shot of a controversial mining operation here. No can do. And you are too far away.

Where do you guys get those weight numbers from?

Measuring them or looking up in Leica publications?

K-H,

My wife's kitchen scales also. How much heavier the Vario Sonnar was than a Noctilux was a bit of a surprise to me.

Just spoken to my dealer (RG Lewis) and they can handle all the shipping so I don't have the courier hassle. At last a benefit for living in central London...

They also report that Leica is giving this a very quick turn round, so I'll try to get one body sorted out this week and send in the other when it's back. Annoying, as lugs on both camera seem rock solid!

Sounds like your wife hasn't gone metric. I have no idea what 3lbs 10.75oz feels like...

We have similar problems with short fasteners in my industry. Loctite works when we cant make an appropriate joint

Mark,

Metric was barely a twinkle in Napoleon's eye, when my wife's kitchen scales were made. They still have a set of brass weights, which you put in the opposite pan. I do have a set of digital scales but the batteries were flat on that and they are strange flat cells (CR11108) which I don't keep (I buy CR1616, CR2032 and CR2025 in a mixed box of 25 for various remotes etc). The weight converted is 1.669kg

I'm impressed your Napoleonic scales read to 3 place of decimals ;) how much does your Zeiss lens weigh compared to the published weight of the Leica 28-90?

Mark,

Interestingly they are virtually identical Zeiss 735gr, Leica 740. The Leica is shorter but a little bit fatter, other than the filter thread flare at the end of the Zeiss, which takes very expensive 82mm filters compared with the 67mm of the Leica. The Zeiss lens becomes quite long at 28mm - see photo - sorry not enough DOF but you get the idea.
