jonoslack Posted April 25, 2013 Share #163 Posted April 25, 2013 When Leica recalled the M8 in early 2007, there were about 1650 cameras out there IIRC and apart from the modification to the sensor board (change of two components), users were offered 30% off a lens of their choice. I chose the WATE for my first body, the 75mm Summilux for my second and the prices I paid seem ludicrously low by modern standards, lens price inflation has been something else. It seems Leica are just saying sorry this time, does make you wonder whether developing the camera in one place and making it in another is to blame. HI Mark Me too, I had the WATE as well, it's still one of my favorite lenses. Don't imagine your low serial number is immune though - I have 444432x, and mine has to go back as well (for checking). I'm not in a hurry though - It all seems to be as tight as a tick, so I'll wait until the initial rush is over. all the best

I don't know what's involved in getting at the strap lugs but I think this might be a huge amount of work.
Sully Posted April 25, 2013 Share #165 Posted April 25, 2013 Back it goes..... #44452xx..... Usually, we take the straps off cameras when used for video. So, hopefully, I can keep shooting until second body arrives which shouldn't be too long. Ciao, Sully

Karl G Posted April 25, 2013 Share #167 Posted April 25, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have to confess, this really makes the wait for the new M delivery less burdensome then it appeared before the recall was announced.
ErikP Posted April 25, 2013 Share #168 Posted April 25, 2013 Who knows the basis of sending out the emails' date=' alphabetical, numerical or astrological sign? I would guess Andy is correct and ALL M's shipped prior to 5/4 are going to have to be returned for checking or refixing the screws. I cannot think of any way for Leica to be certain, other than to disassemble every camera, remove the lugs and refix. Since it appears that the threadlocker was missed out as an oversight on a small number of cameras, the dork that did this, is hardly likely to recall on which cameras he missed out this process. What is more of a concern to me, is the reassembly of these cameras. I want to be as near 100% certain as I can be, that it is fully up to what the original assembly, adjustment, alignment and QC was (or should have been). Wilson[/quote'] I fully understand your position. A brand new car that a workshop disassamble hardly get back to original state. Still it need to be done. trond Posted April 25, 2013 Share #169 Posted April 25, 2013 The problem may be linked to just one workstation/worker who forgot to put the Locktite on the treads. Looking at the production log, Leica knows exactly which cameras might be affected. Hopefully they sent the technician back for training once more. furcafe Posted April 25, 2013 Share #170 Posted April 25, 2013 You can also take it to the local Leica Store, if there's 1 in your city. I can report, if others haven't, how Leica USA are handling this: after you reply to the Leica (Solms) email by contacting Allendale, NJ, they email a UPS label. You take that, and your M, to the local UPS outlet and they box it, insure, and send it off. I'm traveling so can't do this til Monday. But it seems a fair and efficient way of dealing with what is a pain in the neck for all parties.

brianjones1 Posted April 25, 2013 Share #172 Posted April 25, 2013 I have also got the dreaded email informing me my camera needs to be collected. My email did't say for checking but that my serial number indicated it was one of those affected. Serial is 44442xx. I am also wondering how much work is involved in getting access to the lugs. Had a frustrating experience when I had my M9 adjusted and they insisted I sent my Noctilux with it. For some reason the lens came back a slip in the focus ring at minimum distance, was not impressed and it went back again, still no better and informed it was within the tolerances. Am hoping my camera doesn't suffer as a result as it is working perfectly. Due to be collected in the UK on Monday, turnaround 1 week.

Jager Posted April 25, 2013 Share #178 Posted April 25, 2013 Well, I, too, received the dreaded email today. Waiting to hear back from Sarah or Carmen. The lugs on mine are perfectly fine right now, but don't want to take any chances. When walking around the camera spends 90% of the time held in my hand, but every so often I'll hold it by the strap to rest my fingers. I'll deeply miss my still-new M while it's away, but am grateful I have my MM to enjoy in the meantime.
shard Posted April 26, 2013 Share #179 Posted April 26, 2013 Called Leica to check if my M needs to go back for checking as I got mine before April 5th. Before I could read out my serial number they told me don't bother, just send it in for checking. From that, I am assuming that pretty much every one that shipped before April 5th has to go back.
