That's the dealer's right, surely? Most take no part-exchange at all. For the most part it's a mug's game anyway - you will realise more value by selling it yourself.

"most"?

In any event it's a courtesy not a right. They will only take in what they are sure they can sell on at a profit with no returns damaging their margins and reputation.

I'd offload it privately.

The problem is from a dealers perspective, they sell you a s/h M8 and a few days later the LCD fails. Leica will offer you and 'upgrade' deal but if you don't want that you have recourse to the dealer.

He has to offer you a refund (as he can't repair it) so he ends up with an M8 which he can't do anything with, apart from doing a deal with Leica which will leave him out of pocket.

He could sell the camera 'sold as seen' but it would have to be at a much lower price, and an upset customer could damage his reputation.

Personally I would only buy an M8 if it came with warranty. If 'most' dealers are going to adopt this stance then it will surely impact on the s/h prices.

Yes, part exchange harks back to an era before the internet when it was far more of a hassle to find a buyer for used equipment. Whatever a dealer offers you for a camera you will almost certainly get a better price advertising it here or on eBay.

I also doubt most mainstream camera stores are afraid that the (in some cases) "7 year old niche digital camera" will just end up staying at their Used-section for a long time, eventually losing them money. Easier to just say "find a buyer for it yourself" since the hobbyist knows the circles, and let the store focus on dealing new, unopened boxes.

While sad to hear about this, it's understandable. Luckily there's still a specialist store here and there.

Most dealers rely on a steady trade in s/h gear. Where do you think they get their stuff from?

As we know, selling via ebay isn't fool proof with risk of fraud and charge backs. For some people the convenience and safety of selling their gear to a dealer is worth the difference in price. Also many dealers sell on a commission basis.

The UK dealer I have used on a number of occasions currently has 10 used M8/M8.2 cameras for sale - for between £1,489 and £1,749 depending on condition. Most of these I would guess they are selling on commission and they offer a 10 day approval period.

They only have one M9 in stock at £2,899. I would appear to me (and not just from this dealers stock/prices) that whilst used M9's have reduced (slightly, but noticeably) in price - the M8 prices are holding. As the M8 is the cheapest entry into digital M this should not surprise anyone. The M-E probably also has had an effect on used M9 prices.

The maths on purchasing is simple. If you buy private (ebay etc.) - make sure you can return the item if not as described and factor in a Solms service. Buy through a dealer and you will pay more for the comfort factor - but still potentially need a Solms service.

I would sell privately as any part-ex will certainly be less than a private sale.

Any dealer, of course, can make a decision not to trade in a camera model (or anything else for that matter), however demand usually stimulates supply!

I'd tend to interpret from the above that the market price of the M8 is not holding. The fact that the dealer has 10 M8 bodies in stock and only one M9 suggests that the M8 owners (I'm assuming commission sales) have rather unrealistic expectations of what that market price is nowadays.

I agree. The M8 prices have been driven down further here in Finland alone by the M-E/used M9/New M -pressure. The leading chain struggles to sell used M8s at 1700e, or 2100-2500 for M8.2s. Just a year ago the prices were around +500 euros and the cameras were moving.

wattsey/designed,

Valid point.

I guess the dealer would be able to give an indication of turnover. Certainly most (reputable) dealers would give an indication of a realistic sale price for commission sales - it is not in their interest for items not to shift.

The OP referred to dealers not wanting to shift M8's - hence my post. I made my comments as the prices quoted for M8/8.2 are not dissimilar to what they were when I looked last October - on reflection perhaps a drop of £100 can be seen. I would say the M9 price (although based on only one here!) has within the general market place fallen generally. When an M-E can be purchased new (with warranty) for £3,900 then this can be only expected.

Either way its all small beer really. M8/M8.2/M9's are all still good cameras and will continue to command a price despite the wishes of prospective purchasers or otherwise.

Actually, I would guess the recession has a more degrading effect on prices at the lower end of the market than the introduction of new models.

I believe that the best solution for M8 or M8u owners (I am one of them) is to keep the camera as a backup for the M9 or whatever other digital M one is using. In my case a M9.

The trade in price does not, in my opinion, cover the usefulness of a backup camera that is so similar in use as an M9 or an M (I do not have the M).

My Leica dealer offered for my mint M8 (<5000 att) 900 Euro, which I friendly declined:D

Decided to sell it here in the small adds, and it was gone already within a few hours after I placed the advertisement for 1600 Euro!

I think some dealers are perhaps a bit optimistic in their pricing. The camera has dropped to a level at which its catching the attention of many who wouldn't have previously considered a digital M, myself included. I just received mine on Saturday, £1100 exc++ from a well known UK dealer but not your typical Leica dealer (mostly Canon). The rangefinder mech seems spot on, I took about 80 test shots to practice using the camera and focusing on different things at different distances. I checked the exif it shows 5700 shutter actuations the only thing I can find with it is the sensor has lots of microscopic dust that my rocked blower won't shift. Images are LOL sharp even at F2 (50 Planar). If more people could get to use these cameras I am sure more would be hooked into Leica and the M system.

Always check the small print on dealers warranty. Mine has 6 months but there is a clause stating that it doesn't cover NLA parts. I asked about this with specific reference to the LCD screen and they said that if that happened they would try to come to an amicable arrangement. Better than nothing I guess but I feel that to some degree I am taking a bit of a punt on the screen. Knowing my luck it will fail after 7 months anyway, lol.

If I calculate correctly price mentioned for the M9 is about 3300 Euro, and price mentioned for M8 is starting from 1800 Euro. For a used M9 that is much lower than could be found last year, for M8 that is higher than could be found last year.

I think if he would sell his M8's at 1300-1500 they would shift as well as the M9 bodies. M8.2 is worth about 300 more.

IMO M8 has dropped much less than M9 in absolute figures.

Whatever our personal views the market will dictate the price. I would agree that upgraded M8's and M8.2's will command higher prices - as would the condition. Even so there will be a minimum level to which prices will fall. Can't see a good M8.2 going for £800 though!
