Why not. I think it works rather well for this image. The cat almost looks hypnotical and elevated from the tabletop.

 

Agreed. ;)

The gaussian blur works for me in this case.

Two gradient blur effects (near-field and far-field) might have worked slightly better, but not sure.

Who needs a Leica Monochrom indeed? This is a black-and-white sunset scene from the island of Jersey last month.

Taken this morning with D2 steadied beside my knee of our 11 years old golden retriever dog dozing. WB set in camera manually using ColorChecker card. Manual focus. 1/100th second f/2. ISO 200. Processed and cropped in LR4.

Lovely guys - Rotarian musicians reliving the roles of strolling minstrels raising money for local charities by walking and playing in various towns on a round trip of Cumbria totally relying for transport, bed and board on the generosity of fellow Rotarians and the general public.
