So the customer is referred from Germany to Australia to send his camera to the Australian representative who have to decide to send the camera to Germany who will repair it and return it to the Australian representative who will, in due course, send it to the customer. I see some scope here to speed up Customer Care... Unless, of course, the Australian repair shop has suddenly expanded its scope.

wlaidlaw Posted March 5, 2013 Share #22  Posted March 5, 2013 My experience with Leica Service of an M9 failing sensor out of warranty was first class. Leica arranged UPS transportation from the UK to Germany and emailed me a label. I took the camera to my local UPS depot and just 6 days later it was back in my hands, fully repaired, free of charge. My camera had aftermarket dark blue textured kid leather fitted on it, which inevitably was destroyed during the repair. Leica offered me a choice of any leather from their à la carte range, again FOC, which was above and beyond what might be expected.  I arranged all this over the phone with Leica in Solms. All the service people I have contacted over the years, speak good English - certainly better than my somewhat rusty German.  Wilson
erl Posted March 5, 2013 Share #23 Â Posted March 5, 2013 I agree, it seems inevitable to have a trip 'home', but talking to Camera Clinic has a roundabout way of 'building a case' for increasing Customer Service' here in Australia. I am not at liberty to give details.

That's impressive, Wilson (and the leather was a nice touch). My cracked sensor (and well within warranty) M9-P is likely to be more like 6 weeks or longer as Solms have run out of spares. (To be fair, I have been provided with a manky loaner to tide me over but I would like my own camera back sooner rather than later.)

wattsy Posted March 5, 2013 Share #26 Â Posted March 5, 2013 Manky? Must be the one I beat up in Africa a couple of years ago.. Â Could be. It's got a dent in it and looks like someone kept it in a tool box along with their hammer, pliers and spanners. It seems to work though, which I suppose is what matters. wlaidlaw Posted March 5, 2013 Share #28 Â Posted March 5, 2013 I do hope this shortage of sensor spares is not an early symptom of the same malaise as Leica have with M8 rear screens. Â Wilson
jaapv Posted March 5, 2013 Share #29 Â Posted March 5, 2013 Don't worry - it is a more or less regular occurrence over the years. I guess it has to do with Leica being a small customer for Kodak/Truesense and a batch production system My M9 had to wait three months for a sensor in 2010. Â Erl, Â You might get a discount offer on a new M Â Seriously this sensor failure seems to be becoming a little bit of an epidemic and I am not talking about cracked cover glasses. I was never told what the cause of my sensor failure was. It had developed white spots between the cover glass and sensor and strange whirls, which when you took a photo, looked like a whole lot of transparent worms. Even the sensor cover came unstuck. See the effect of the cover glass in the following pics. (One of my more creative works! )  Welcome, dear visitor! amusong Posted April 4, 2013 Author Share #35 Â Posted April 4, 2013 An update - I have been informed by Camera Clinic today that Leica has accepted that, although the warranty period for this camera ended in April last year, they will replace the sensor as if under warranty. Somewhat relieved to hear this, although, having seen some of the comments about shortage of M9 sensors, I am not sure how long I will have to wait to get my camera back. Â I was also surprised, as my reading on this problem developed, to realised that there are quite a few sensor issues with the M9, so I am not alone. Â In the meantime I have bought a Fuji X100 as backup. Nice fun unit......but I do pine for my nine! Â Thanks for all the comments, information and support above.
