Just acquired this VIOOH with red box and was intrigued by the eye sight correction lens. A short and superficial check does not give a code word for this item.

Somebody knows ?

Thanks

Hi JC,

The codeword was ORTUX, it was a correction lens for Leica I - IIIa and also for the universal viewfinder VIOOH.

Best,

Michael

Michael,

ORTUX is an another correction lens (the definition in the Laney accessory book is wrong for the univerasl viewfinder, check the design)

here is an ORTUX

Hello Jean Claude,

It doesn't seem to have the elegance of Leitz mechanical work of that period. Perhaps someone else made it.

Does it say "Leitz" or have some recognizable mark on it?

You might bring it to an optical shop & have them measure to see what optical corrections it has. Earlier Leitz correction lenses could be ordered to correct for astigmatism as well as nearsightedness & farsightedness.

Best Regards,

Michael

No engraving as there is no place for as, on the ORTUX

It is verywell made and have the same chrome plating as the foot of the VIOOH and it is threaded to screw in the Viewfinder eyesight.(and so there is a thread in all VIOOH eyesight)

With the DIOOY I can check the correction grade, it is a -2

However, even the 1957 USA catalog quotes the Universal Viewfinder in relation to 2 kinds of correction lenses, and in those time the Universal was the VIOOH by sure :

I agree, JC... "screw in" is the revealing term... by the way... the ORTUX you posted HAS the lens or is it only a "mount" (to fit LTM eyepiece) with a thread ? I wonder if ORTUX / ORUXO were mount + lens... and in case one needed the screw in lens only (like for the VIOOH) they supplied anyway the mount...

The ORTUX has its own lens (to clear on the pict) and it covers the two rear windows of the camera.

I have also a OKBZO (same shape, but larger) for IIIg

you see the rebated metal, it is inserted into the groove around the viewfinders to be fixed on.

.....

Apparently... don't see any other explanation to this little mistery... but... does your lens fit also, AS IS, a Leica IIIa eyepiece, for instance ? The description in the US catalog I posted seems an oddity to me...why quoting Leica I which even doesn't have a finder ? The IIIa had its own correction for the RF eyepiece... so it has a sense that a diopter for the VF is a single screw-in item like your VIOOH's one, but, as you say, the ORTUX was made to fit on both the windows thet were put next to next in the models after IIIa....

Luigi, I just tried now and it is screwing in a Leica II, III, IIIa Range finder rear window,

so we can conclude that the ORTUX is the base name for two different adapting system but for the same use.

(forse abbiamo scoperto l'acqua tiepida...:()

Only in the RF eyepiece ? I haven't a IIIA and thought that it was the RF eyepiece that has its own dipoter adjustement built - in...
