wlaidlaw Posted August 1, 2013 Share #123 Posted August 1, 2013 I have just acquired today, a new toy. To match my very nice but rather heavy (and the older I get, the heavier it gets) Rolleiflex 3.5E, I have just acquired a Rollei Baby in lovely condition. It even comes with its original presentation box, which I have never seen before on a Baby. Having climbed for a while, prices of the Baby seem to have dropped recently. This one was I thought, good value. The rare late model black ones are not fetching the $1,000 that they were 18 months ago. Film is and may continue to be an issue. I have just bought the last three rolls in stock of Rollei Crossbird from Maco in Germany. All the UK suppliers are out of stock. There is no B&W anywhere. Sebastian Junghans of Maco says he is hoping to re-start production of 127 both in colour and B&W "sometime soon". I don't want to be reduced to buying dubious out of date film at inflated prices on Fleabay. I wondered if I might suggest to Ilford-Harman that they re-start production of 127 film. If you are the only source in the world, you can charge fancy prices and folk will pay with a small smile on their faces. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! Keith (M) Posted August 3, 2013 Share #124 Posted August 3, 2013 It looks to be a superb example and I wish you success in sourcing film for it, Wilson. When I decided that it was high time to have a TLR again, I settled on a Rolleicord Vb (as opposed to a Rolleiflex), mainly for weight reasons. When I decided that it was high time to have a TLR again, I settled on a Rolleicord Vb (as opposed to a Rolleiflex), mainly for weight reasons. Keith, If Maco does not start up again with 127 film (and I think they will) or I cannot persuade Ilford to compete, I have a fall back. A Japanese Company which sells it in Japan, have started an offshoot operation in Canada, making and selling 127 160 ISO colour negative film, at just less than $10 a roll, which is not too bad. Strangely, I am told it works better in Rollei Babies than Rollei Crossbird, whose reels can sometimes be an overly tight fit in the Baby. http://www.bluefire.ca/BluefireMurano.htm My Rollei Crossbird is taking a long time in the post from Germany to the south of France. With the temperatures we have here at present (up to 38º in places), I hope it does not arrive cooked! Wilson

Guest Posted August 3, 2013 Share #129 Posted August 3, 2013 ... Congratulations, but why the Rollei Baby was never converted to 135 film, as it was possible in some very simple imitations? It would have been a blockbuster. Since the 127er film was sold always only in a few variations, that dream camera remained unsaleable in the windows of the photo shops, whether gray or black. RED ROBIN Posted August 4, 2013 Share #130 Posted August 4, 2013 No leica's except for glass but a Canon P works quite well for me and my Bessa P. The SLR department slots are filled by the Nikkor FT2 and the FTn, but I still bring out my old Minolta XGM, the camera that got me back into this hobby. Two Canon Barnacks help to sharpen my skills. A number of 50's and 60's rangefinders add to the diversity. Sometimes it's the XA, Sometimes the Yashica 135, using regular 35mm film, A favourite(?) well I'm an old geezer now - retired on a pension, so and if not for the digi craze I'd never have had the chance to use . .. much less own all these mechanical works of art. stack62 Posted August 7, 2013 Share #131 Posted August 7, 2013 Right now my favourite non Leica is the much overlooked Konica Hexar RF. I've known about this camera for years but only recently took the plunge and bought one from KEH. It's basically a motorized M7 with higher shutter speeds and a lot less expensive. Great 0.60x viewfinder, works great with my Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 ZM. It's shutter and motor are much quieter than I expected...about the same or quieter than the Contax G1. It uses all M-mount lenses. I use it along side my M3 with 50mm lens.

I use it along side my M3 with 50mm lens. I think you will find its shutter and motor are exactly the same as the G1/2. The sound difference is probably down to the thinner titanium body of the G1/2, resonating more. Many years ago I had a lightweight titanium barrelled .308" target rifle for snap shooting and I had to get rid of it because it "twanged" when you fired it, which was very painful to my arthritic hands. I wonder if it was Leica who put about the false rumour of the different flange focal distance of the Hexar RF, as it was too good a competitor to the M7 According to Dante Stella, it was all a lie. CalArts 99 Posted August 8, 2013 Share #133 Posted August 8, 2013 For 35mm (aside from Leica M) I'll use a Nikon F3. I have both finders (DE-2 and the high point DE-3) but I personally prefer the earlier DE-2 since it has higher magnification and is a bit smaller in height. I don't wear glasses so the high point relief of the DE-3 isn't necessary for me. For all other film use, it's a Wista SP metal 5x4 field camera. The Wista may be a poor man's Linhof but nonetheless the build quality is really good, imho. For an 'always with me' sort of 35mm film camera I use the Nikon FM2N. With the MD-12 it's super ergonomic and yet still lightweight and very easy to carry around. Simple, functional, and reliable. Welcome, dear visitor!
