@bumac Posted March 24, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking for a small, pricy and good camera. I want it for small tours in the montains. Big tours are for M6 and in a future for M8. What could you recommend? Lumix, D-Lux, Fuji F30, etc. Please answer without to by Leica-blind. Thanx. j_w_davies Posted March 24, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 24, 2007 Why must it be "pricy"?
andit Posted March 24, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 24, 2007 It depends on what you want to photograph. Some of the images that have been posted by people using a Ricoh GRD are excellent (this has a fixed length 28mm lens, if I remember right). The option might be a Sigma DP1, also using a fixed focal length, and using the new 14MP Fovon sensor. Don't know this camera, it is very new on the market. Very small but still quite usable is the Leica C-Lux (now in the 2 version), or the D-Lux 3. Â Andreas
jruffolo Posted March 24, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 24, 2007 I second the D-Lux 3; also take a look at the canon powershot g7- a little bigger than the dlux, but is also a very nice camera with a decent manual control layout and it produces some great images. hunz Posted March 24, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 24, 2007 Why must it be "pricy"? Â maybe he means "premium" as in 'top quality' or the 'best'. english is such a rich language..
craigrmurray Posted March 24, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 24, 2007 Reiner: Â I've had great luck with the D-Lux 2, and want to buy the C-Lux 3 when it finally ships. The picture quality of the D-Lux 2 (and the D-Lux 3 should be the same or better) is outstanding, and the camera is small enough that it begs to go everywhere with me. Plus unlike an M with a lens, if you drop the D-Lux, you're only out seven or eight hundred bucks, not seven or eight thousand. Especially if one is traveling. Â Anyway, just my $.02 worth. Â Good luck choosing someting that works for you. Â Craig
johnll Posted March 24, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted March 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you can live without RAW, for this sort of photography, consider the Canon G7. Very small, excellent interface, very sharp. ISO up to 1600 (3200 at reduced res), but above 400 you will usually want to work on it in post.
tommycrown Posted March 24, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 24, 2007 I still have C-Lux 1 after selling my Dlux 2 since Clux is more compact than Dlux. Â However, I am saving up for the new Sigma DP1... ooooh I know this is Leica forum, but from the successor of Leica CM, why don't they make something with fixed aperture??? Â If Sigma DP1 works like it promised, the camera will outrun all the compact cameras this year unless GRD comes with different sensor this year. Â Anyone heard of Sigma DP1 release date or price? Some speculation is below 1 big grand! Thanks in advance~ Â Tommy
jwr50 Posted March 24, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted March 24, 2007 Another vote for the D-Lux 3. For a camera that will literally fit in your pocket, it's a great performer.
earleygallery Posted March 24, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted March 24, 2007 If you normally use the M6, why not, er, use the M6? Â You'll probably wished you had.
ckthual Posted March 25, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 25, 2007 One more vote for the DLUX3, it's a nice little camera. 28mm ans f.2.8 very useful (compared to Sigma DP1 f.4). Try to avoid shooting over 800iso though.
jaapv Posted March 25, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted March 25, 2007 I'm with James. Shoot film or go the whole hog with the M8. And buy a digital notebook in the form of the C-lux1 to carry at all times.
MarcRochkind Posted March 25, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted March 25, 2007 For outdoor use, I stongly recommend against any camera that has only the LCD for viewing. An SLR (which won't be compact) or a camera with an optical viewfinder is a must. This rules out the D-Lux-3. I have one (Panasonic version), and it's a great little camera, but it's extremely annoying to use in sunlight. Â I haven't used the G7, but have heard good thinkgs about it (check out the review on the Luminous Landscape). No raw, though. However, with Lightroom and Photoshop CS3, you can process JPEGs using the same inteface as raw, so this is some compensation. Â --Marc
Guest stnami Posted March 25, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted March 25, 2007 ...shoot film, small sensor cameras are a bit iffy with landscapes, you take a heart stopper of a shot and you can't enlarge...........my oly XA take better shots than a digital P&S... what about a Ricoh GR1 28mm film job
Riley Posted March 25, 2007 Share #15  Posted March 25, 2007 Sigma DP1 foveon same sensor as the SD14 dSLR accessory OVF fits in hotshoe images as landscapes are quite nice like M8 it has no AA filter, so its all very sharp Welcome, dear visitor! ECliffordSmith Posted March 25, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted March 25, 2007 Reiner, Â I have a D-Lux 2 and really love the camera. Â I have recently created a gallery of large images from the camera to allow others to judge the quality under differing conditions and settings. I assume that the D-Lux 3 will be the same or better. Â Feel free to take a look. Â Leica D-Lux 2 Photo Gallery by ecliffordsmith at pbase.com
losta Posted March 25, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted March 25, 2007 I don't think the Samsung DP-1 is available yet. It was just announced a few weeks ago at PMA and Samsung is usually pretty slow shipping new product. But that's the one I'm looking forward to seeing. Â I have Ricoh GRD -very good quality but 13 second RAW write time is too long, D-Lux 2 and D-Lux 3 ok but missing several things, C-Lux 2 -nice little snapshot camera but no RAW. Guest stnami Posted March 26, 2007 Share #18  Posted March 26, 2007 GRD A translation of a new upgrade, this is about no8 for ricoh...samesensor.... customer care here   2007-03-22 Noch gut eine Woche, dann bekommt die Ricoh GR Digital einen erweiterten Schwarz-Weiß-Modus. (Yvan Boeres) Translation (as good as I can...):  2007-03-22: Please, wait about a week, and then the Ricoh GR Digital will get an expanded black-and-white mode. On March 30 2007, Ricoh will publish a new firmware for its small travel/reporting camera, that will extend the b&w mode of the GR Digital with several settings. After updaing the camera, you will be able to adjust contrast and sharpness of monochrome/b&w images in five steps,in addition to b&w images also take monochrome picture with different hues (e.g. sepia), and using automatic color series record different variations (color image, b&w image, sepia hue) with only one press of the release button. There is currently no version number available, but this will be the eighth firmware update since the market introduction of the GR Digital two years ago (Nov 2005) (Yvan Boeres)
rob_x2004 Posted March 26, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted March 26, 2007 Reiner, while there is nothing wrong with DLux Clux files, if it is a traveller think about shock proof water proof in the pocket round the wrist or neck and not worry about it dropping down a rock face. Have a look at the small Olympus seven twenty five or something like that. You never have to think about it. All the Leica pocketables are pretty soft cameras and better suited to someone prepared to look after them....and bag them..and put little filters on them...and keep them nice and warm...pamper and... guywalder Posted March 26, 2007 Share #20 Â Posted March 26, 2007 Reiner, if your 'main' camera is a film camera it seems to me better to take a small film camera for the small tours, it saves all the battery charger, back up device (back up device charger) baggage. Â I had a GR digital, but the focal length of the lens (actual, not '35mm equivalent') is so short that you always get that 'everything in focus' look. I also wasnt convinced of the lens sharpness on mine. The GR-1 on the other hand has a proper 28mm lens, takes the same films as your m6, has great lens quality, and its tiny magnesium body slips into a shirt pocket. I really regret selling mine! The oly xa is also great, and a dirt cheap 2nd hand buy, but I found the exposure control wasnt up to the slide film challenge. Guy
