MarkP Posted January 7, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 7, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm trying to find a 3xND filter that will fit under the lens hood of the 1.4/35 Summilux ASPH FLE for use with the Monochrom. The hood will not screw down over the B+W 46mm F-PRO as it is a fraction of a mm wider than the lens barrel. Does anyone know of a filter that will fit? Thanks in advance, Mark
Advertisement Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Hi MarkP, Take a look here ? ND filter for 35 Summilux FLE ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
kokoshawnuff Posted January 7, 2013 Share #2 Posted January 7, 2013 What a curiosity. I don't have one, but I was interested enough to look around, and Ken Rockwell (I know, I know ) says that only some of the BW filters fit when he tested, all of the Leica filters did fit (though leica doesn't make an ND 0.9 in 46mm), and the Hoya filters fit (they do make a 46mm ND 0.9) so it might be worth the $25 gamble if you are willing to bet on Ken
rickp13 Posted January 7, 2013 Share #3 Posted January 7, 2013 while you're looking and researching, have you considered trying a variable ND filter to see if it might fit? i read here in the forum that b & w are now making one in several sizes. good luck with your quest. rick

Same problem. Though I will try one of the new low-profile PRO-1 filters as soon as I get the chance. while you're looking and researching, have you considered trying a variable ND filter to see if it might fit? i read here in the forum that b & w are now making one in several sizes. good luck with your quest. rick Thanks Rick, but the vario-ND filters are two linear-PL filters that rotate over each other (B+W are not yet producing them but some other filter makers do). I already have a KSM Circ-Pol which I use without the Leica hood. Obviously any Leica hood which covers the filter cannot be used for a PL filter (or therefore Vario-ND) which needs to be rotated for effect - therefore one needs a hood which screws into the filter (I have yet to get one for 46mm). Therefore I'm just after a 3xND filter over which the original hood can be fitted. Interestingly, I've started experimenting with PL filtration with B&W (in the past I've only used it for colour photography) It can be very effective, especially with the Monochrom, in removing scattered light which significantly increases the tonal range, especially of the sky and foliage. wattsy Posted January 7, 2013 Share #5 Posted January 7, 2013 How long have you had your 35 FLE, Mark? I seem to recall that Leica have made some subtle changes to the hood since the introduction of the lens to make it easier to fit over filters. I know that I don't have a problem fitting my FLE hood (bought 2012) over my B+W F-Pro filters (an 040 orange and a 103 3 stop ND).
rickp13 Posted January 7, 2013 Share #6 Posted January 7, 2013 hello mark ok, i understand your point about the variable ND filter. if i try one (which fits), i'll post it here. fyi re combinations which DO work, i have lens nr. 4139307, shade 12465, and a b&w yellow filter f-pro digital 46mm which fits properly under the hood. cheers rick ps here's the first news about the b&w vario filter. i found the link in the 'noctilux ND filter' thread here in LUF XS-Pro Digital ND Vario: Flexible light control without changing the filter The main feature of this filter is its continuous adjustment of the optical density. The XS-Pro Digital ND Vario is an all-round tool that, as its name suggests, can be used with variable f-stops. The filter is without image defects. Thanks to the oversized mount, it can be used for wide-angle lenses and combined with other gray filters. It is also equipped with a front thread for further accessories. Coating: MRC nano F-stops: +1 bis +5 Diameter: 52 bis 82 mm
wattsy Posted January 7, 2013 Share #7 Posted January 7, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) XS-Pro Digital ND Vario: Flexible light control without changing the filter Looks like an interesting product though not much chance of that fitting under the FLE hood. It will be a particularly useful product for the Noctilux (though B+W haven't made life easy in not making it in E60 size).
MarkP Posted January 7, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted January 7, 2013 Ian and Rick, very interesting. I think there has indeed been a recent modification to the 12456 hood. I also have a 3.4/21 SEM ASPH which is 18 months or so younger than the 1.4/35 Summilux ASPH FLE. They have the same hood 12456. However, the B+W filters fit under the newer hood. As I won't ever need an ND filter on the f3.4 lens I've just swapped the hoods over. Genius:rolleyes: Problem solved! Thanks for your input. Regards, Mark
Bill W Posted January 8, 2013 Share #9 Posted January 8, 2013 I have both the 35 FLE and the 21 3.4 with the metal hoods. Both of mine work well with B+W filters. I tried several. Leica modified the hood.
