A good place to start?

Well, re-start.

I shot an M6 + 50 summicron V3 for about two years, my first Leica, and a very enjoyable experience. Mostly used Superia X-tra 400, lab developed and home scanned. Never really did much B+W for cost of processing. I used a 35 Biogon f2 sparingly alongside the 50 during this time.

Then I decided to get a bit closer.

For the last 3 months I was using an M8, had the M6 traded in for a V3 Elmarit 28mm, which brought tremendous joy as a 35mm equivalent. It's an M8, it's great, but it's too damn loud. 1/30, even with soft release, meant camera shake. This is not something that happened with the M6. (Maybe I'll try out an M8.2 in the future).

So I went cold turkey. Got rid of all the digital gear and the Biogon, and picked up an M2 and 35 summicron asph. Have my first roll of film in, again superia x-tra 400, but now even that is bothersome to have processed, so it's time for me to learn how to develop film. I've got a few rolls of Tri-x and the traditional D76 stuffs incoming, so the next few weeks should be exciting!!!

It's my first time with a meter-less camera and I'm not really planning on using the other 50 or the 28, just the 35 for a while.

Anyways, just wanted to share! Now I'm off for a walk. Happy holidays!

Sounds exciting. Good luck with your new endeavor. I've always enjoyed doing my own development when time and space permitted so I hope you enjoy it as well. It's a huge topic with lots of different options so have fun with research and you will develop your own technique and look.

Cheers,

Joel

as an FYI, the upgraded M8.2 shutter (as i have in my M8.1/M8u) is definitely quieter than the original M8 shutter....and also has a discreet mode built in.

I always come back to home cooked B/w film after some digital. The M8 seems to be my "kids party"/"christmas" camera but the M3 and M6 is for the keepers nowadays.

Just love the way I do photographs with film. No chimping, no taking ten images of the same subject just in case. Much more thought behind every shot.
