I am looking at a Canon 85/1.9 LTM lens to add to my Leica 111f lens outfit. Currently I only have a Summitar 50/2.0.

Any views or opinions on the performance of this lens or advice is solicited. Thank you.

Erl,

I have a Canon 85/2 Serenar, which is thought to be the same design as the f/1.9. The 85/2 has low contrast but is quite sharp in the centre wide open although predictably softening towards the edges. It suffers from veiling flare which reduces the already low contrast further although fitting the (rare) T-50 hood makes a difference. Mine is a chrome lens and quite heavy with 15 aperture blades that give a near perfectly round aperture hole tandhat produces quite nicely soft out of focus areas. The focus throw is long (and heavyish) - some 330 degrees or about 2 o'clock to 12 o'clock between the closest focus of 3 feet and infinity.

I rarely use the 85/2 on my IIIf because the lens's size and weight is contrary to what I use the IIIf for: a light pocketable camera.

To be honest, my LTM Carl Zeiss Jena 85/2 Sonnar beats the pants off the Canon in every department and offers that lovely Sonnar signature to boot so my Canon will probably leave my possession before too long.

Pete.

Pete, that is interesting. I have just committed to the 85/1.9 from the Leicashop in Vienna. They say it will not ship till mid January as their packing department is currently on vacation. Hmm.

I just like using the 111f, certainly for small portability, but also because I love the ergonomics and simplicity. I may just live with the weight of the 85/1.9. It does include the VF and lens hood. Maybe one one of life's experiments!

I have also ordered a a 35/2.8 Serenar from Canada. Going overboard a bit!

this could be the camera I use for a year to produce ......... ?

You can see from the pics that even my Noctilux now resides on an M6 for film. The darkroom is in full swing again.

Erl,

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your IIIf so much. Whenever mine decides to accompany me I am slightly overawed and giddied by its tactility and sheer engineering precision as much as I am with the novelty of shooting with a camera that's a little older than I am and its quietness and simplicity.

I can hear your M9 grumpily muttering under its breath from here ...

Pete.

I suspect my 85 Canon Serenar, when it arrives will be heavy with brass, chrome and glass, but I have spent a working life toting a full Hasselblad kit everywhere so everything is relative.

I had a Serenar 85/2, which I used on an M3. After several months I began to see a lightening of shadow areas. At first I thought it was flare, but, given that the lens had always been used with a hood, looked for and discovered haze inside. It is a large and heavy lens; and on a screw body it may feel unwieldy. Performance was satisfactory. It seems likely that the f/2 and f/1.9 versions are optically similar but not identical. The later Canon 85/1.8 is held to be noticeably better.

  • 1 month later...

I had the Canon 85 1,9 on the M8.

It was long and top heavy ...

optical the quality was good.

Now I have a Nikkor 85 2,0 which ist heavy, but not so long with outstanding quality.

This lens is a lot more harmonic with a Leica body

Looking forward to see photos from your IIIf and Canon 85, erl

I recently bought the Nikkor 85/2 for my LTM tele. I already have the Jupiter-9 85/2, which is surprisingly good and cheap, but the build quality was poor which meant there were no click stops and you accidently changed the aperture when focusing (or vice versa) which is maddening. I mainly bought the Nikkor 85/2 for the better build quality and I understand it is a similar design (they are both based on the 85.2 Zeiss Sonnar design I believe). I nearly bought the Canon so would like to see how it performs.

I haven't tested the Nikkor lens properly yet, but in my other htread here I show some decent results from the Jupiter 9.

Nick
