Hand grip

Michael:

I've found that the handgrip helps my shooting immensely, especially when shooting verticals. Because Leica unfortunately chose to cover the M8 with a material even slipperier than the M6 (the older Vulcanite covering the M4-P and earlier was the best, IMO) I feel the camera handles much better with it mounted. I have rather somewhat slight hands with long fingers, and find I have a much better purchase on the M8. I often use super wides with auxillary viewfinders and shoot one-handed, which the handgrip really facilitates. I used to shoot with the Leica Motor which had the batteries inside the grip, so I was already used to the cylindrical shape.

Hope that helps.

Live well,

Craig

I found the grip of my m-winder very useful. On my m8 the same sort of grip has a different, more plastic like, feeling. Leica's leather camera protector also improves grip and offers some protection. I prefer it over the handgrip.

5 replies in to this thread and for what it's worth, yes the grip improves the ergonomics and "feel" significantly.

Bought the camera without and went back 5 days later to get it.

It should be a standard peice of equipment.

I didn't think I needed the grip as I have never used one with any other M. Then on a whim I bought a black one to go on my silver/chrome M8.

It made handling the camera much easier when shooting and when just grabbing it out of the bag.

I like the fact that it replaces the original bottom plate and is not just a add-on like the grip for the film M's

Is anyone using the hand grip? Does it help with the ergonomics?
I couldn't do without, but... i find the one for M8 quite too short.

I'm used to the one on Motor M, witch is a bit taller.

Something like a fixed rewind level (or one useful, i have a dream) on the back, would help a lot for the ergonomic too.

As an added benefit, I have the Manfrotto rapid mounting plate permanently attached to my regular baseplate and just change baseplates when in need of a tripod.

Me too. And I think the grip increases handholding stability, makes it easier to carry, and avoids the de-casing when changing cards and batteries.

I, too, went back for a handgrip a week after I bought my M8 and it's lived on the camera ever since.

It allows me to dangle the camera by my side from my fingertips unobtrusively as I walk. I also use a leather wrist strap for security.

Pete.

Yes, thank you that helps a lot.

I wonder that the handgrip will work for others. Maybe it fits better to small hands.

I don´t like it. It is to chunky. Nothing ergonomical. And the plastic used is slick.

I have learned to use my pinky under the standard bottom plate instead. What i really miss is something on the back for my thump.

Will have a closer look at the SLING and the STRAP from leicagoodies.com.

Anyone using their SNOB?
