JCharlton Posted December 18, 2012 Share #1  Posted December 18, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received a brand new Leica M-35mm/f1.4 ASPH Summilux-M, and I'm curious if this is normal behavior. Right around the 1.4 setting, there seems to be a two click stops - as you can see from the video, no other aperture stops do that. I only have a few days to return the lens if needed, so please advise.  Best, Justin  Video: https://vimeo.com/55897509  Please forgive the beginning and jump to 20 second mark for the demonstration. From what I understand this is normal behavior for many Leica lenses. No need to worry!
lct Posted December 18, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted December 18, 2012 A lot of lenses do that, don't worry.
JCharlton Posted December 18, 2012 Author Share #4 Â Posted December 18, 2012 A lot of lenses do that, don't worry. Â It wouldn't be much of a concern if my Leica 50mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical did the same. So is it this particular lens that functions like this or a defect in my unit or design, I wonder. lct Posted December 18, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted December 18, 2012 Depends on the samples, my 50/1.4 asph do that as well.
JCharlton Posted December 19, 2012 Author Share #6 Â Posted December 19, 2012 Well, I'm determined to find out for myself. I've ordered a second lens and will compare the aperture ring performance on the two. Spent 5K on a single lens, was hoping for better hardware construction than my $1200 Zeiss Distagon. I will have an update later this week.

earleygallery Posted December 19, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted December 19, 2012 Not a fault, not a 'construction issue', many lenses (most lenses) do this. I have a Zuiko lens next to me right now, it moves a tad past both ends of the scale.

I have a Zuiko lens next to me right now, it moves a tad past both ends of the scale. Â Do you think it's worth returning or sending into Leica for them to look at it? Maybe it can be tightened. A bit frustrating, as the spot where there is play in the ring, happens to be at the point of full 1.4 aperture, so it's easy to accidentally bump down the aperture a bit when focusing. lct Posted December 19, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted December 19, 2012 Do you think it's worth returning or sending into Leica for them to look at it?... If there is some play in the ring yes but rotating past the widest mark is normal for many lenses and won't change the actual aperture in any way. Â I don't understand why you're frustrated... everyone says it's normal. The lens is 1.4 not 1.3 or 1.2, so you can't "accidentally bump down the aperture." If you'd like, send it into Leica for them to tell you there's nothing wrong.
wattsy Posted December 19, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted December 19, 2012 It's normal. Â Have you checked to see if your lens rattles?
pedaes Posted December 19, 2012 Share #14 Â Posted December 19, 2012 Have you checked to see if your lens rattles? Â Naughty! If you start the poor guy on that mystery it will go from slight paranoia to the full blown variety.
banshy Posted December 19, 2012 Share #15 Â Posted December 19, 2012 Even the Noctilux behaves that way (or I just broke it ).
earleygallery Posted December 19, 2012 Share #16  Posted December 19, 2012 It's normal. Have you checked to see if your lens rattles?  Just to add. Whatever you don't do, don't shine a torch through your new lens and look at it through the other end!!!

Hmm... It's not necessarily rotating past the 1.4 aperture, if anything, it's tending to rotate in a bit, just to where the aperture blades begin to show. As I've said, I've ordered another copy and will compare the two on Friday and upload a video if there is a significant difference. I do appreciate all the answers, though! JCharlton Posted December 22, 2012 Author Share #19  Posted December 22, 2012 Update: After receiving a second copy of the lens, I can confirm that it behaves very similar around the 1.4 mark. Whew! Good to finally have closure on the topic. Thanks for all the helpful, and some humorous, responses.
philipus Posted December 22, 2012 Share #20 Â Posted December 22, 2012 The aperture doesn't change in that last little bit. It is normal on many lenses. Don't worry. Â I also wouldn't worry - and don't with respect to my FLE - but at least on mine it does seem as if the aperture gets wider. See this thread.
