No, it isn't, because there is no quality debate. Both of the current M 28 mm Asph lenses are equally good, and both are an improvement over the previous non-Asph Elmarit-M 28 mm (which was no slouch). The current Elmarit-M 28 mm Asph is just one stop slower than the Summicron but also significantly smaller, lighter, and more affordable.

The only thing possibly open to debate is the differences in rendition, or character, and which you like better—if there is a difference in the first place.

Hi O1af,

I did replace the Elmarit ASPH with the Summicron ASPH.

My point was that I do prefer the 28 Summicron (and the extra stop).

Mark

Saving €1650 in itself is a happy event. I have used both the Elmarit and the Summicron. Suggesting that the Summicron is not worth the extra money is IMHO totally beside the nail. For me it's rather the other way around: I'd rather save about 1650 by noy buying the Elmarit. I still regret selling my Summicron when I stepped over from M8 to M9

The Summicron is a bit less contrasty and its bokeh is a bit smoother perhaps but it is not always true. An an owner of both, i need to do side by side comparos to see differences and the reasons why i choose one or the other lens are mostly size and speed, rarely IQ i must say. FWIW.

I am indeed quite pleased with my 28 Summicron. Thanks for all your inputs.

Good info given in this thread and I enjoyed the reading.

I just ordered the Cron and also own the Elmarit, so I'm curious about your findings.

I use the Elmarit mainly on my M8, so wanted a second one for the Monochrom.

I found on the 75mm Lux and Cron that I actually prefer the Lux, even so it is less sharp than the Cron, but this is probably that I'm not yet fully used to the MM sharpness.

Let's see how the 28mm pair will do it on the Monochrom.
