robert_parker Posted November 10, 2012 Share #2 Posted November 10, 2012 Hi Ben Another super portrait of a man with a profoundly interesting face and using a great colour pallette. I'm not totally convinced that the 80 wide open is helping here in that it gives a slightly 'sucked forward' look to his features, almost Hobbit style, which ever so slightly undermines the superb composition and interaction necessary to produce a result of such quality. Timmyjoe Posted November 10, 2012 Share #3 Posted November 10, 2012 Nice shot Ben. My first impression was I thought he was a Hobbit.
pauledell Posted November 11, 2012 Share #4 Posted November 11, 2012 Ben, A fine portrait. The subject's intense expression surely leads to an interesting character worth knowing and talking to. Paul

Robert, I always appreciate your thoughtful & insightful comments. This is the 50 Summilux. Although small, he exuded a BIG Presence on NYC's larges & widest byway, Broadway. robert_parker Posted November 11, 2012 Share #9 Posted November 11, 2012 Robert, I always appreciate your thoughtful & insightful comments. This is the 50 Summilux. Although small, he exuded a BIG Presence on NYC's larges & widest byway, Broadway. It's a profounly good portrait - I do think there is a validity in my comment though (even if I should have spotted the lens ), in that it's really about the need to beware of constantly playing on the knife edge of DoF, as this can have drawbacks as well as benefits, no matter how superbly executed - many will disagree though . melissah Posted November 12, 2012 Share #12 Posted November 12, 2012 Love him, the color, and I have zero problem with the lens. I am curious as to why you cropped to square? Experimenting or was there a distraction? IMO if you're going to crop (this image) to square I'd like more bottom and less top. Other than that outstanding. Btw if I saw him on the street I'd probably just stare and forget to shoot. Maybe. ;-)
vdb Posted November 13, 2012 Share #13 Posted November 13, 2012 K-h said it. Compelling. And Robert, you should know by now that Ben lives on the thin edge of shallow dof:))) A little more shirt and less sky I agree with. Unless of course the original had more sky. roguewave Posted November 14, 2012 Author Share #14 Posted November 14, 2012 Robert, Melissah & Virgil, again thanks for your insights. I think I cropped this because he is really tiny, yet he feels almost overpowering in person. I did struggle at first with several different crops. This one felt right to me. I really want to give him the respect he commanded.
