Thanks for all the inputs.

Perhaps the last question, is it prone to the italian flag?

My copy does everything Leica claims, and more! I have corresponded with a couple of forum members that noted a bit of magenta edge in one corner from their lens, and I believe this problem was related to a de-centering issue that was corrected.

If you are asking about a more general CA problem (i.e., in Leicakillen's beautiful shot [instanbul?], the near-field railings and shadow details away from center would show complimentary hue fringing), NO, I have seen no faults with the 24 Elmar.

I really like the Elmar 24/3.8 that I bought a short while ago, but there is a slight colour tint to the edges that isn't removed by Leica's profiling on the M240 (latest firmware). It isn't noticeable in most shots but some recent snow shots of mine show a bit...didn't even bother to correct it as it was so slight and it didn't detract from the shots.

I think the Elmar 24 mm f3.8 is a fabulous lens that always seems to be eclipsed by the much vaunted Super Elmar 21 mm f3.4 lens. I appreciate that the 21 mm focal length seems to be more popular than the 24 mm focal length, but from examining MTF curves and distortion, the Elmar 24 mm lens seems to outperform the Super Elmar 21 mm lens. Have users of these lenses any views on this issue?

I bought the SE18, SE21 and SE24 at the same time but haven't managed to take the 24 off to shoot with the others

I use the Frankenfinder so framing with correctly balanced horizons and angles is not such a challenge on my M9

Super sharp wide open but since wide open is almost f4 I won't write poems about it, good contrast, good resistance to flare, filter size matches with most other Leica lenses so you don't have to carry 2-3 sets of filters around and of course, small, light and built as well as any Leica lens

The perspective a 24mm gives you is fantastic - of course, depending on your intended usage

Here are some recent images this lens gave me:

Interesting to me that some forum members with the 24 Elmar find red edges, but others not ... It makes me wonder if Leica quality control could use a thorough CLA?

I had the good fortune to extensively test and choose between two lenses (big difference in serial numbers too), and neither one of them had corner artifacts that I could see @ f/3.8. I chose the warmer lens because of its remarkable color saturation, although the colder lens was even sharper in center.

The red edges are very subtle, attached is what I see. The shot is pretty much a torture test for red edges...underexposed by ~1.5 stops and snow at the edgeshttp://m4.i.pbase.com/o9/46/550846/1/153942874.ayWeSMmv.L10008902.JPG

Gee, not so subtle to me! I have encountered degradation like you show in your snow shot in the lower right corner of similarly challenging compositions with my 18mm SEM. The red shift and detail smearing occurs only in the far lower right corner for my 18, but you have the issue on both lateral edges.

Relative to the specific topic of this thread, however, I have not encountered this problem with my 24 Elmar. I have plenty of images with corners that are both darker and closer than the focus plane, and even @ f/3.8 performance is equally superb all the way around. In fact, I rarely shoot my 24 Elmar at other than f/3.8.

I found information in the German section this lens has strong vignetting, even stronger than described in the technical data.

Could some M users give any comments on this?

In regards to the red edges. Latest firmware on the M made some WA lenses work better. Was it possible that Leica didn't receive complains about 24 Elmar, and simply ignored it?

I had a 21 SEM for few days, and even though it was a great lens I had to return it due to some techincal issues. Now, as I returned the 21, I again started to think the 24mm might be a better option for my style. :o

Corners are soft below f/5.6 though.

Hm, the MTF charts show excellent performance even in the corners, and it doesn't change much between f3.8-f8. In my eyes, based on the MTF, it looks even better than 21 SEM, which is expected.

Thanks for the comment and a reminder for the post #25. Vignetting doesn't seem to be too bad on the provided samples.

Red edges - Did you notice any change between original, and latest firmware? My conspiracy theory, this lens is not so popular, and perhaps left behind when the extra lens profile corrections in the latest firmware were made.

I continue to be stunned by the image quality of the 24mm Elmarit. This one at f/3.4.
