It was working fine, now it's gone south -- just a few days before the Leica M launch (hmmm....)

(yes, I swear it's not shaky hands)

Anybody seen this before? I sent Leica an email, but I'm guessing they won't reply until after photokina, so I thought I'd ask here too. Perhaps it's just time for an M9-P (but I do love the M8's frame counter so much).

Definately looks like a bad sensor.

The interesting question is, will Leica quote to repair it, or will they just offer you the 'upgrade' - do please let us know.

Actually they will probably replace the sensor and I would be surprised if that would entail high costs.

Hello jaapv,

The quotation for the work required on my M8 was €308 - this was for the labour cost only as follows:

- Electronic modification

- Adjust rangefinder

- Clean rangefinder

- adjustment of all parts

- cleaning and end control

Additional to this, I think, was the shipping cost of €40 and a payment of €110 for a 5 day fast track repair, which I opted for, as my nephew's wedding was imminent and I did not want to risk not having the camera back for the event.

Tax was added to all of the above.

I noted that there was no charge for any spare parts, so I do not know if the sensor was replaced or not.

Best regards,

Nick.

Looking at your images, the sensor was certainly replaced. These were costs for additional work, clearly.

I sent it off to Leica in NJ and it came back with an estimate of $1300 for a CCD replacement. I've since bought an M8.2 so I'm kind of torn on repairing it...

I forgot to post an update. The manager at the NJ Leica location gave me a call and Leica ended up paying for the parts --- I ended up only having to pay for the labor. So I received a new CCD and CLA for just $400. Super duper! Great to see them do that.

And so I sent a number of lenses to get 6-bit codes instead. Boy was I amazed at how backed up they are --- 6-7 weeks.
