stevelap Posted September 20, 2012 Share #61 Posted September 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Already ordered. Use the new functions or don't use them - there is that choice - but they are available if needed. Otherwise the M is still a digital rangefinder, with an updated sensor and faster electronics. Pleased with the announcement.
Advertisement Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Hi stevelap, Take a look here Time for a Poll ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Son of Helm Posted September 20, 2012 Share #62 Posted September 20, 2012 Has ordered one, with EVF and R-adapter. Nice to have the possibility to use R-lenses, like macro and tele. As I use my R6-2 for film occasionally as well, I have never liked the idea of changing the lens mount, as was the old option. - But next spring, I will sell my M6 and the M9. Happy about the M
pragmatist Posted September 20, 2012 Share #63 Posted September 20, 2012 Yep looks good to me. Well done Leica!
pragmatist Posted September 20, 2012 Share #64 Posted September 20, 2012 The M (not keen on the new naming convention:mad:) design wise, the camera looks like a dog's dinner). Bit harsh, Not much different looking than an M9!
tomasis7 Posted September 20, 2012 Share #65 Posted September 20, 2012 none of its features interested me at all. though led illuminated framelines are pretty cool. Without illuminator window, it looks a bit strange, like more tank built aka M5 I think M is cool enough for some to purchase and play with as toy or work tool. The price shows that LEica is determined to sell many. I agree with Watts, the back looks as dog's dinner. His wording made me chuckle:D Hopefully M Essentials goes to own direction and has simplstic interface/design. Like touchscreen with ONLY 2 buttons or one. Led illuminated framelines, why not. then Cmos sensor. MP style look. No need moulding for thumb to rest since there are thumb up acessories so one removes if one doesnt want. my two cents
roydonian Posted September 20, 2012 Share #66 Posted September 20, 2012 Who will buy the MWho likes the functions ( by function EVF, Liveview. R adapter, video, GPS, grip etc) Who was pleased with announcement of he M Who was dissapointed with announcement of the M No plans to buy the new M – when the time comes, my M9-P will probably have to be prised out of my cold dead hands. Since my M lenses now cover all the focal lengths that my Leicaflex outfit did (expect for 180 mm), I’m not really in the market for and EVF and R-adaptor combo. I can always get 180 mm by teaming my 90 mm with an X2 extender. But I have to admit - the combo looks like a good 'R solution'. Never had any desire to shoot video. Never been a fan of grips. When it rains, I close my ERC, so am not in the market a weather sealed camera. I don’t ‘chimp’, so a charged M9 battery gives me a full day’s shooting. More ISO would be nice to have, but not nice enough to make me want the new M. While I agree with Wattsy that the new camera looks a bit of a dog’s dinner, focus confirmation in the new M is likely to be good news for ancient Leicamen with failing eyes. My 21 mm Elmarit was formerly the property of someone whose eyes could no longer cope with the rangefinder. In my own case, an eye surgeon has now given my better vision than I’d enjoyed as a young man, so barring future eye disease I should be rangefindering for some years yet. But I’ve been lucky in this respect; for those with failing eyes, the new M may keep them shooting for years to come. Leica was aware that this problem existed, and has finally produced a workable solution. The new camera seems to contain a lot of features that many users claim to want/need, so I’m pleased that Leica has listened and given them what they want. I hope it becomes a major success. You could say the M9P was just another cosmetic marketing ploy that worked rather well with people who would rather spend a pile of cash on a face-job than a useful piece of photographic equipment or a trip somewhere interesting. Far from being “just another cosmetic marketing ploy”, the M9-P turned out to be just what I wanted. By the time that the M9-P was launched, I’d already acquired all the M focal lengths that I need, so there was no “useful piece of photographic equipment” that came to mind. As for “a trip somewhere interesting”, within a month of getting the M9-P, I’d begun a long holiday in Venice. Once again, I'd been lucky. When I finally retire, and my income shrinks, things will be very different. Best regards, Doug
cam2000 Posted September 20, 2012 Share #67 Posted September 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I praise Leica for finding a solution for the R folks so they can enjoy using there lens.... and for the aging photographer who's eyesight is less than perfect, the live view will be great on the new LCD screen! I personally wished only for a M9-P upgraded to a higher CCD sensor ....... So I will pass on this new "M" and keep my two M9 and the latest M9-P. I hope they will keep some batteries for us M8m M9 and M Monochrom.
bocaburger Posted September 20, 2012 Share #68 Posted September 20, 2012 I hope they will keep some batteries for us M8m M9 and M Monochrom. The ME uses the same battery, as it is essentially an M9.
animefx Posted September 20, 2012 Share #69 Posted September 20, 2012 I have already replied to this thread earlier, but I just wanted to mention that I pre-ordered my Leica M yesterday I finally feel as if I can get rid of my DSLR and only have the Leica M as my only camera. Who will buy the MWho likes the functions ( by function EVF, Liveview. R adapter, video, GPS, grip etc) Who was pleased with announcement of he M Who was dissapointed with announcement of the M Thoughts ?
IWC Doppel Posted September 20, 2012 Author Share #70 Posted September 20, 2012 Has anyone considered the 'extra' size and weight of just the R lenses, if the sensor is stellar and better than Canon/Nikon with adapter, great.... But if not I am struggling to see a real portability advantage, especially the space and time needed to disconnect and reconnect lenses, adapter, viewfinder etc - Just a throught Maybe a 5D with adapter and R lens attached in the bag is easier and no bigger burden overall ? I consider now the extra bulk of my R9 – as soon as I receive the M, I'll part from the R, and will have extra room in bag for 2 more M lenses. Plus full frame. Reds Posted September 20, 2012 Share #72 Posted September 20, 2012 Love it. Ordered an M. But please, Leica - ditch the grey on the thumb wheel thing for production. Black please :-)
SiriusLux Posted September 20, 2012 Share #73 Posted September 20, 2012 I have also answered the poll already. Inhave ordered one - actually Inhad preordered one in April already... My wish: black chromium finish - that means a metal finish vs. the paint, them I'd consider a black ne over the silver one.
CalArts 99 Posted September 20, 2012 Share #74 Posted September 20, 2012 I personally wished only for a M9-P upgraded to a higher CCD sensor ....... I think the ME was developed the way it was to not upset current M9/M9-P owners (especially those who just purchased recently.) It makes current owners not feel like they have an inferior and forgotten product, with the ME being the same thing but a bit 'stripped down.' I also have a feeling that we may see the ME eventually evolve into a 'new M9-P' model using new sensor technology. Within a few more years (maybe even the next Photokina in 2014), there may very well be a 'traditionalist' ME with upgraded electronics and sensor in parallel with the new M as Leica's M system product line. But right now I think it would have been unwise politically to sell a ME with a new sensor. Plus they can use the existing electronics and other parts without new jigs and tooling to produce the ME. So it's also cost effective. And they can hopefully get new customers into the line with a particular price point, revamping the camera later on down the road. timd. Posted September 20, 2012 Share #75 Posted September 20, 2012 i'll keep on being happy with my m6.
chris_tribble Posted September 20, 2012 Share #76 Posted September 20, 2012 i'll keep on being happy with my m6. Good for you! Seriously considering the M if finances allow (but black chrome please!). If I get one it will be with a view to getting rid of my rarely used though essential Canon 5D2 and lenses - but I'd love to see if I could get an adaptor that will let me use my Canon 300 USM 2.8 in manual mode on the M body. What a combination! Also IF I get the M, I'll be tempted to keep at least one M9 as a workhorse. re video - I'd love to have this on an M. It's a facility I rarely use, but where it's professionaly important to be able to deliver from time to time. e.g. I have a commission in India coming up where I will have to carry the 5D2 as part of the work will involve videod interviews. SO much better to only need to carry the one system, Interesting times...
chalkdust Posted September 20, 2012 Share #77 Posted September 20, 2012 Before I read some reviews and see how it all works out, I will not buy one. In regard to its features, I am not interested in video. But I can see some good uses for live view and for EVF. I think those would extend my use of the M system. I hope it all works well and produces great looking files.
rcoles Posted September 20, 2012 Share #78 Posted September 20, 2012 I am very interested in the "M", but need to know a lot more about the completed camera performance before I place a bet. Hope it turns out to be as good as advertised. Bob
leafster Posted September 20, 2012 Share #79 Posted September 20, 2012 After looking thru lengthy review, that's how I feel. Am glad on the Maestro feature, and plus EVF (not critical). The new sensor, let's see how it goes. Other than that, I am happy to continue using M9-P. So I still might look into the new M only if my M9-P give way. Manicouagan1 Posted September 21, 2012 Share #80 Posted September 21, 2012 As an Apple Aperture user, preordering is pointless, Apple probably won't support it until the initial rush is over. Given the apparent immaturity of the product shown as Photokina and the new sensor designer and contract sensor fab shop, buying and early production copy does not fit my approach to buying high technology goods. There seems to be more opportunity for serious issues to show up once the camera gets significant use than with the M9. As for the features, my hope is that the new sensor will yield what I condsider acceptable images at ISO 3200, I find 800 about the maximum I am happy with on my M9. I use a 24mm lens a lot (bought originally for my M8), and a supplimental viewfinder is generally on my hot shoe. It will take some experimentation to see if either liveview is adequate for composing images, if not I may try the EVF. If the camera seems capable of ISO 3200 shooting and has no significant issues, I'll buy one once Apple supports the format.
