Leica's New Cameras

To add to the viewfinder not provide two. The solutions seem very bolt on and less genuine integration and innovation to me ?

Yes, I agree that some of the "innovation" seems a little Rube Goldgerg. I guess the R-lenses would need an adapter but, the EVF would have been more innovative it it was in the current VF. But, then again it might have ruined the OVF zen for some user that really like the OVF. They would argue that you can just plug the EVF in if you want it. If it wasn't for my R-lenses I may never get the EVF. I just want live view for my wides. I could see using the M and never buying the EVF.

I wouldn't have minded a diopter but, I don't want to start this thread going in the direction of what Leica should have done, I think they did a lot.

Don't forget the ME (and the M-nothing also) do not have frame preview levers. Evidently I must've missed getting Leica's customer survey where all us long-time loyal users got to vote on that

Perhaps no official survey, but it astonished me that so many people said, the lever was superfluous:

And there have been similar threads earlier. I think Leica is listening (at least to some...and they are customers).

Now that we know the reality I'm delighted. My M9 system continues to be valid, and I can consider the M10 if I want improved low light + alternative viewfinders + a system for macro with my current visoflex bellows system.

A question - as one not currently blessed with a set of long Leica lenses, do any of you have thoughts on using earlier manual focus Nikon or Canon lenses? With the right adaptor it would seem reasonable for these to work. OK - no coding or exif data, but a possible solution? Glad I didn't get tempted by a 5D mk3...

I thought we were due to see Leica's take on the CSC today, is the ME it or is a CSC still coming? The reason I ask is the ME isn't any smaller than the M. I was hoping for a Leica version of the X-E1.

If they really start selling the new M in next January it will still be produced in their present factory which had not enough capacity for the M9-demand. They will have to produce the other M-models, the X and the S2 as well there- like all the lenses. They would be just unrealistic if they had announced another system now.

I have to admit the lever is a feature I could live without. After this many years I don't need to preview the FOV to pick what lens the shot needs. Actually I think I could probably compose almost as accurately without any framelines at all. The preview is one of those things I tend to use because it's there. Come to think of it, the one on my old M6TTL stopped working and I used it a year before getting it fixed along with a CLA for some other problem.

LED frame lines! No lever! Thanks' date=' Leica! Just what I want!

As for the rest - awesome thinking. Awesome!

I only read from Leica's specs that the framelines are LED "illuminated". I take it to mean it's the same old frame lines just lit with an LED instead of the translucent window.

Yes, I expect the framelines are lit in the same way as the M9Tit special edition which they showed at the last Photokina. Was it as long ago as that? I like the removal of the illumination window. I assume the viewfinder has the same LED display inside for shutter speed and metering.

the guy in the London video says the camera is weather sealed?:) I always thought a rubber gasket in the baseplate shouldn't be too hard to achieve...

Leica listened to me about the hand grip with GPS, extra battery power and analog flash socket.... I came up with that one 3 years ago for the M9...

They ignored my suggestion and failed to implement the raised edges around the VF window- disappointed there:(- but overall actually happy with the camera and the price- surprised actually. I fully expected the camera to cost a lot more than it does... is this lower price an indication of the declining global economy and luxury spending patterns?

I could imagine being pretty pissed off if I purchased an M9 in the last month or two... I can imagine the market will be flooded with second hand M9's for the next 6 months or more.

Adeal is bound to price gouge with this as they have tried to do with the MM which is more expensive here than anywhere else on earth (I stand to be corrected if there is one place where it costs more).....

I seem to recall that they priced the M9 around $10,000 when it was first released?

that's why I got my camera from New York's Kurland. Got the camera 4 months ahead of adeal and saved enough money for a 1973 Summicron 50 :) Turned out the Summicron I got was possibly an ultra rare Leica prototype and worth perhaps triple what I paid for it...

If I buy an 'M' i doubt it will be from any Australian supplier...

Weather sealing should be more than just a simple gasket for the base plate. What about all the gaps around the shutter, buttons, dials and levers?

seems quite clear to me: yet another variant on the m9- with very little cost to develop... Leica have managed m9, m9-p, MM and now M-E- all out of the one design effort. Not bad.

The horse isn't quite dead: so it is OK to keep flogging it, right?

as to weather sealing- I am sure there is more than just the gasket in the baseplate.... ;-) As to the levers: there are none now... that is true weather sealing right there...

I wonder if they have changed the design of the shutter button though? It seems liquid can enter an M9 at that point easily and cause damage.

Why?

Not everyone wants all the bells and whistles or video in a camera......some of us are very happy with what the M9 delivers as it is. I'm not even remotely tempted by the new M.

The M9 still remains a very competent camera. I've had such incredibly good use out of both of mine since 2009. I had one M9 body upgraded last October, I'm now going to have the 2nd body upgraded which is looking rather tired. I was holding back on the upgrade, pending yesterday's announcement.

Both M9s have performed flawlessly despite having been dragged all over the place from Africa to Antarctica to Iceland and beyond, without a single hiccup in 3 years!

Leica who may just possibly know a little more than we do about what the market can take, clearly believe that there's life left in the M9 line.

Otherwise why introduce the new entry level range finder camera? And by introducing the M nothing they're also catering to those who want/need all the bells and whistles.

The 2 cameras are however not necessarily mutually exclusive....
