Alexander deserves kudos for getting Leica to make this camera. That speaks very highly about the company, too.

Still I am wondering about the formulation in his ad to swap the camera against another Monochrom "+ some Leica optics". I fear this may, in most buyers' eyes, significantly overestimate the camera's value.

That being said, I don't doubt for a second that there are people out there who are willing to see this camera as a unique piece and who see a significant potential value increase as a result.

The problems I see are the following:

  1. this thread explains pretty well what the camera is worth
  2. the camera has actually been used, which diminishes the value somewhat from a collector's point of view, and
  3. it is not difficult for anyone ordering an M Monochrom to obtain an identical camera at a fraction of the "price" set in the ad.

On verra what happens. As always.

Cheers

Since when is it legitimate to discuss asking prices in the buy-sell forum in the other forums. This was always considred not done as far as i can remember.

Since so much was made about this special 'one-off' camera by it's owner in the Forum with much interest probably further driving its value. Now it's on sale/exchange.

The door on this was effectively opened by the OP. Furthermore, as it's a one-off one cannot speak generically about such a cameras value

I should add that I've made no comment about it's value, very nice camera that it is.

If that is the case I apologise and won't mind if a moderator were to remove my post. I just thought it would be OK to share one's view since the cost of the "upgrade" is a part of the thread.

I don't like the black chrome. After six weeks all edges and corners are silvered. Worse than the black paint:mad:

...... Alex's uses the silver chrome bits stolen from the M9-P production line... this finish does seem a good bit more resistant to corner bumps and abrasion....

maybe the premium is worth it after all...... we will see in the fullness of time :o...

Is it any worse than a black chrome MP or M8? It seems that the M6 with zinc top plate had a much tougher black chrome coating than that applied to the later brass top-plates.

The rental unit I got from LensRentals had around 8K clicks on it and the metal was showing through on the base plate almost all the way around. Darn shame they didn't use the brass top and bottom plates. If they had, a well-brassed unit would have that certain classic look that many appreciate.
