Scarlet Posted July 15, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have seen forum members with signatures including the term "Leica ambassador". I ask this question here because perhaps they relate to Leica somehow. Mods feel free to move if appropriate. My question is what does this term mean? /S
Advertisement Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Hi Scarlet, Take a look here Leica Ambassador meaning. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
magosak Posted July 16, 2012 Share #2 Posted July 16, 2012 +1 I was wondering the same thing.
Michael Geschlecht Posted July 16, 2012 Share #3 Posted July 16, 2012 Hello Scarlet & magosak, Welcome to the Forum. I waited for a Leica Ambassador to answer you, there are a number, but so far no luck. So: If you go to the top of the page you will see an icon "search". If you click it & write in "Leica Ambassador" you will find a # of responses. Scroll down to "What/Who is a Leica Ambassador" by Ivan Muller. The Thread by Ivan will help to explain. There are many resources for learning throughout the Forum not the least of which are the Icons @ the top of every page & the various Sections below them. The biggest resource on this Forum is the members who are a diverse group of intelligent, knowledgable people w/ all kinds of backgrounds, from all over the World, who generously share their knowledge. Often in fields far beyond photography. Feel free to ask, as you did. It is a good way to learn. Best Regards, Michael
Scarlet Posted July 16, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted July 16, 2012 Thanks Michael. I actually did search before posting but used the Googlesearch not the forum search which did not bring up that thread. Still I am left in the dark as to what the term means. I don't mean to criticise or question or start another fairly fruitless debate like the one in that thread but just note that it does appear to be a concept set up by the Administrators whereby they asked certain longstanding members of the forum to wear the moniker in their signatures while participating in the forum discussions with a view to correcting wrong information where necessary or required, thereby upholding the good name of Leica. Not sure if that's close to the truth but that's - currently - my take on it.
250swb Posted July 16, 2012 Share #5 Posted July 16, 2012 I may have got it backwards but I always thought it was like sending out an ambassador to another country, and awarding the title was gentle encouragement to 'go somewhere else'? Have I been wrong all this time? Steve ()
jaapv Posted July 16, 2012 Share #6 Posted July 16, 2012 Just an idea that never worked out. A number of us were deemed to be close enough to Leica to liase between the customer base and company. The concept does not work because Leica does not feed it. Having said that, a number of senior members here will alert Leica to serious problems reported on this forum, and many Leica employees have a link to this forum on their computer’s desktop. Michael Geschlecht Posted July 16, 2012 Share #12 Posted July 16, 2012 Hello Everybody, Like a lot of the World, the term "Leica Ambassador" appears to be somewhat imprecise. Scarlet & magosak, You will find that as you become more familiar w/ the resources available here: "search", "wiki", "stickys", etc: There is quite a bit available. Explore. But, still keep in mind: The most valuable resource is the members. Best Regards, Michael
jaapv Posted July 17, 2012 Share #13 Posted July 17, 2012 ...so the "title" is in actuality nothing more than a redundant affectation? Well, it does indicate that the person in question is regarded by Leica as a knowledgable customer. I won’t use it. Real ambassadors get paid. And a pretty secretary. And a tax-free car......:D
jaques Posted July 17, 2012 Share #14 Posted July 17, 2012 don't forget diplomatic immunity Jaap- the best bit ... and to be 'fifth columnists'- they would need to be in disguise...

Real ambassadors get paid. And a pretty secretary. And a tax-free car......:D ...hmmm, sounds more and more like a rather quaint one-way exercise in self-recognition, Jaap (this is the Leica forum, after all ). I really wanted to get some understanding of a question that cropped up several times but was never fully answered, for one reason or another. Really not a big deal for me, except the "title" could confuse some forum members - thanks.
asmith Posted July 17, 2012 Share #17 Posted July 17, 2012 A classic definition of an ambassador is someone sent to lie abroad for his country. Deliberately ambiguous. Alwyn
skinnfell Posted July 17, 2012 Share #18 Posted July 17, 2012 A close friend of mine is a "Leica Ambassador". After he won a bunch of awards for various stories, Leica in our country invited him to become a leica ambassador. He gets a good discount on equipment and in turn he has to write a blog post for them every once in a while about his (positive) experiences with the equipment. andybarton Posted July 17, 2012 Share #20 Posted July 17, 2012 He gets a good discount on equipment To the best of my knowledge, this is NOT the case for anyone on this Forum who uses that title.
