Thinking of buying a 50mm Summilux ASPH

I shoot mainly in 50mm, so I've gone through a few other lenses, until I got this one. My focus ring is a bit stiffer, but I've only noticed it on the first day. Now I don't even feel it. It's so good that I'm no longer tempted by any other 50 lenses, even the Noct.

I got mine in 2005, selling a v.2 Summilux and the current Summicron in the process. I didn't really neeed the speed, but the extreme resistance to flare – especially in comparison with the Summicron – did it. I want to be able to trust my lenses.

The first specimens were quite stiff focusing; this was the first M lens with a floating element. I actually had to send it to Solms for some physiotherapy. Later lenses do not seem to have the problem. My second FLE lens was the 35mm Summilux ASPH v.2, which is buttery smooth. So it was a manufacturing and not really a design problem.

This is my 50mm lens, period. I wish for nothing else. Landscapes made with this lens show amazing detail. It's just as fine for an impromptu across-the-table portrait in really low light. The APO-Summicron, which is as sharp as my 21mm Super-Elmar is, does in fact produce more definition that you can use when shooting handheld in a mobile mode, Leica style. So for me, the Summilux is the ultimate 50mm lens.

I've got the LHSA black version, without a built-hood.

It is backfocusing with my M9, and I have not had it adjusted out of sheer laziness, so I have not used it much with digital files.

One of these days I will send it in to be calibrated and 6 bit coded.

In researching this lens, I have been hard pressed to find any negative reviews. It's really a fantastic performer. I can't comment on the focusing since I had it sent in almost immediately after I received it since my m9 had to go for service at that time too. I figured that I might as well have them calibrated.

Regardless, it has perhaps the nicest bokeh of all the leica's, and it also has a great feel! I think one reviewer stated that it feels like a "small cannonball" -the chrome at least.

Fantastic lens, and one I will never part with. I used to have a black one, and now a silver one. Both of them were stiff at the beginning. After regular use both of them got softer, but the silver one appears to be significantly smoother in both focusing and aperture than the black one -- pure joy!

Thanks for all the feedback

I called the dealer and said yes to the summilux on hold for me

Looking forward to shooting with it

Neale

As a matter of interest I ordered from Precision Camera in Austin Texas and they seem to have a few new leica lenses in stock for anyone else who is looking

I began this post with my interest in buying a new 50mm Summilux and mentioned that I had read that some new lenses had back focus issues straight from the box

I see there is a current posting where a new owner of this lens has exactly this issue and has been seeking advice on the forum

I will be interested to see when my new lens arrives on Friday this week how it performs

Hopefully this is a rare occurrence

Fingers crossed.....

Re: Is this very wrong for a new Summilux 50 ASPH?

I've read how sharp and perfect the present 50 Summilux ASPH, ordered a new one and just got it this week.

I tried it today and was disappointed in shots being out of focus

.....................

It is not unknown for this lens to need focus adjustment out of the box. Just send it in. It is not easy to test focus reliably as nobody has as elaborate a testing rig as is really needed at home.

Mine was perfect.

Remember that the chances are that there will be relatively more posts about problem lenses because of owners concerns. Those with perfect lenses just go out and use them.

Don't worry about something that is relatively unlikely and enjoy your new lens.

I've bought many Leica lenses (7 used and 10 new from dealers including the 0.95 and 1.0 Noctilux) and this is the first lens that has been out of spec. I think that is a pretty good record for Leica.

I received my new 50mm Summilux lens today and very pleased with all test shots, all spot on

and the lens renders in a beautiful way.

The only 50mm lens I own that I could compare to the Summilux to is my Nokton 1.1 and in the few shots I took comparing the lenses at f1.4 it was like night and day

With the Summilux files being so much detailed, richer and much better bokeh and even a little more soul.

I even preferred my shots from the Summilux at f1.4 to comparison shots from the Nokton at f1.1

I was blown away as I think my Nokton is a great lens but the Summilux is truly in a different league.

Cheers to all for your input and advice.

Glad you are happy with the Summilux.

Time to sell the Nokton?

I certainly could do with the cash to help cover a little of the summilux cost but it will be a tough decision as I do like the Nokton and it has it's own merits plus f1.1 and the softer rendering may be useful at times......I will have to think about this one......

Not so much quality of construction as I believe it should be the same high Leica quality. Rather difference in materials used. Some folks seem to say that the silver chrome holds up to paint loss better. Some say it has smoother rings. Others say it is nothing more than an urban legend.

My chrome lux focus ring definitely not smooth, rather stiff.
