X-2 viewfinder

Could somebody please explain to me why a manufacturer of Leica's quality and standing ommited a built in view finder from The X-2?

You can only use the back screen in low light and if you attach the mediocre EVF you can't use the accessory shoe OR put the camera into a Pouch/bag/case

so you have to "rebuild" the camera every time you use it ... loosing the spontinaity which is the whole point of this camera?

Can we PLEASE have a built in view finder in the next one.....

Welcome to the forum Tim.

The over-riding aim was to build a compact camera. The X* series is just that. Building a worthwhile usable viewfinder into the camera would infringe that objective. I agree that a viewfinder is essential which is why I added the OVF to my X1 from the beginning. When compactness is paramount, such as when stowed for transit, the VF can be removed and replaced when resuming shooting. Not ideal, but a workable compromise.

Well, if they had left that loony flash out, they should have had room for an excellent finder up in that corner without making the camera any bigger. Remember, it´s not a rangefinder, and needs only one frame, for 35 mm FOV. Even without parallax correction, it would be a vast improvement over any shoe-mounted viewfinder, be it electronic or optical. And a shoe-mounted flash, if ever needed, would be a vast improvement over the built-in contraption.

The X1 should have had a built in optical finder, it wouldn't have added much to the size (imagine a VF like the small Voigtlanders built into the top plate).

I'm not sure this camera - the X2 - needs an EVF. Fixed focal length lens with AF. Why does one need a 'live view' viewfinder?

The retractable lens and lack of viewfinder was a big mistake in the design concept. There's no question that the lens and sensor are excellent however.

+1, and why I won't buy either. That and the cost. I could get a used M8 and a CV 28/1.9 and a B+W 486 for about the same money as an X2 with EVF.

you could but that's not a better camera than the X2. At least for me.

If AF is a priority, and more than one lens is not, then I can see where the X2 would be a better camera for someone than an M8. I can't really see any other reasons promoting what is essentially an oversized point-and-shoot over a barely-larger full-system camera with a larger sensor, and that gains access to an assortment of the finest lenses on the planet.

right. and add much better ISO performance and really a substantially smaller and lighter camera..The X1/X2's not for everyone but an astoundingly great camera. I have owned an M8 and just sold my M9 to make way for the MM. No manufacturer can please every consumer. Yes, I would happily trade the flash on the X2 for a viewfinder but I find the EVF with 90 degree tilt immensely useful. I get images due to it's smaller size and weight (and EVF tilt) that I would never easily get with an M series.

The X2 EVF is by no means "mediocre". Not to say it could not be better, but it is just about state of the art and certainly more than acceptable in use. It removes screen visibility problems, and shows all the information that the screen shows.

The problem with optical finders is that one is never quite sure where the focus is, unless one goes into p&s mode first, holds the focus then moves the camera to the finder - not exactly a quick or satisfactory operation IMO.

The X2 is capable of a lot more than simple p&s.

I agree that having to "build" the camera in order to use the view finder is a bit of a pain, but surprisingly I find myself using the led screen most of the time. I shoot DNG + jpeg with the camera set to high contrast B & W. This way the led screen is B & W which i find pretty easy to see in bright light and the DNG captures the color. I am using the leica leather case and when I shoot i pull the strap hard against the back of my neck and find it to be pretty stable. I can see the screen clearly as well as being able to see what is going on around me. Took me a few weeks to get used to this after a lifetime of using a view finder but find that it is a good technique for me.
