Clive Murray-White Posted July 3, 2012 Share #1  Posted July 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My poor old brain got me thinking, dangerous I know but as I thought about it what I really needed most often was a 28mm lens M mount, or M with an adapter, maximum DoF. Which in effect would mean that you wouldn't need to change focus  Even fixed aperture wouldn't be a bad thing, plenty of exposure control through the speed dial etc.  Anyone know of optically brilliant examples of fixed 28's that could be used on an M8? Advertisement Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Hi Clive Murray-White, Take a look here 28mm fixed focus lens for M?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted July 3, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted July 3, 2012 Just use any 28, set to f8 and fix your focus according to the DOF scale. You can use superglue if you REALLY want to fix them!

Leitz Summaron 2,8 cm f 5,6 !!! An old classic, very compact, in LTM+adapter : keep it around 11 and in most cases you can use it forgetting its focus knob : excellent at those apertures, a bit of trouble to find (=adapt) an UVIR filter+hood. Clive Murray-White Posted July 4, 2012 Author Share #5 Â Posted July 4, 2012 very helpful - any 28 LTM with M adapter - no need for range finder linked so we've got Leitz/Leica - Canon, Nikon, probably a bunch of FSUs, Voigtlander? any real stand outs other than the Summaron 2.8? earleygallery Posted July 4, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted July 4, 2012 But they are rangefinder linked. Â An exception is the Voigtlander 25mm Snapshot Skopar, which has 3 focus point click stops. A great little lens too!
gjames9142 Posted July 4, 2012 Share #7  Posted July 4, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 28 Version 4 elmarit (46) is a brilliant lens. It is sharp, smooth and beautifully made. I prefer the look to the new more compact asph Elmarit. My main working lens. Welcome, dear visitor! Clive Murray-White Posted July 4, 2012 Author Share #10 Â Posted July 4, 2012 Thanks again - anyone tried any of the FSUs like the Orion 15?
Clive Murray-White Posted July 4, 2012 Author Share #11 Â Posted July 4, 2012 Thanks UliWer - actual pictures are very helpful - the reason I'm on the hunt for a 28 or 25 for my M8 can be seen in the pano I did in my worshop (fuji X100) full size the detail blew me away making me think that the M8 may do a very interesting job of the same kind of scene. gjames9142 Posted July 4, 2012 Share #12  Posted July 4, 2012 Clive, given your needs, which I hadn't really figured out, you might do better with a 25. The Zeiss 25 biogon is an absolute killer -- my Leica dealer in Montreal has one for C$1128, which is a lot less than any Leica equivalent. A couple of friends who are major photographers, swear by this lens, which I have tried and been enormously impressed by. I don't want it for the M9 because you have to have an auxiliary finder. Here is a store front from the 28 Elmarit I mentioned. No exactly sculpture, but you get the idea. Welcome, dear visitor! Paul J Posted July 4, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted July 4, 2012 The thought of not focussing is wonderful though I have good results just pre focusing my 35 to 2 or 3 meters and shooting at f4 - 5.6 with hyper focal for a some room for guestimation. I don't even bother to focus.
Clive Murray-White Posted July 5, 2012 Author Share #14 Â Posted July 5, 2012 Biogon looks wonderful - I suppose I should also have said I'm trying to do this as economically as I can I already have a nice little VC 21mm (which has DoF to spare and is very easy to pre-focus)) it has turned out to be too wide producing really wacky looking distortions, similarly 35mm on M8 is just too long for this space. 4X5B&W Posted July 5, 2012 Share #15  Posted July 5, 2012 You might want to try the VC 28 3.5.  Very compact, light and an excellent performer, a good street shooting lens on a M8. Clive Murray-White Posted July 6, 2012 Author Share #17 Â Posted July 6, 2012 Finding well priced cvs can be difficult - what about the Ultron 28/2 there are few around at reasonable prices - looks quite nice to me even though Sean Reid freaks me out with focus shift? gjames9142 Posted July 6, 2012 Share #18 Â Posted July 6, 2012 The CV's are fine, but you have to find a good one. Ten percent of one side of mine is out of focus. The other nine-tenths are fine. You have to be able to test it.

Ralf Posted July 6, 2012 Share #20 Â Posted July 6, 2012 May be , I don't get it; but there is one answer: 28mm Summicron.....equally as good on the M8 as on the M9 or....... a potential M 10! One of the best lenses ever made, where am I missing the point?
