Advertisement Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Hi iphoenix, Take a look here M4 Prototype?? Another Zero Feedback Seller. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
J_Thompson Posted June 30, 2012 Share #2 Posted June 30, 2012 There's an old saying concerning gambling that one should not bet more than one is prepared to lose. This seller has no feedback, so no history, but he just happens to have a prototype Leica for sale? There are others on this forum more knowledgeable than I am about Leica camera history and models, but for me, this camera and seller doesn't pass the "smell test" so this seems to be a real gamble. Collectors and/or historians, what do you think?
earleygallery Posted June 30, 2012 Share #3 Posted June 30, 2012 If this is a scam, which seems likely, then the camera is irrelevant. The 'seller' will have copied/pasted some photos and description from another listing, or another website. The typical scammer doesn't actually have the item they're listing, they just want you to pay for something which you think you are buying. So the M4 prototype may well be genuine. The question is, is the seller?
jaques Posted June 30, 2012 Share #4 Posted June 30, 2012 it's a very nice looking camera... no serial number on it? I did a brief google on it's ass and couldn't find the source of the original pictures- often you can... very nice ebay photos for a zero feedback ebayer- but perhaps he is a pro photog I certainly wouldn't be bidding on it... 250swb Posted June 30, 2012 Share #5 Posted June 30, 2012 An M4 with a finger guard around the lens release? This looks to me more like an M3 with a replacement M2 top plate, especially with the placement of the screws on the front of the body. The frame counter window has been drilled out of the M2 top and a chrome washer glued on as a surround (the width of the washer would cover the embossed counter arrow on an M2 top). iphoenix Posted June 30, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted June 30, 2012 Actually, I'm concerned that this camera might really be for sale but, looking at the screw slots, might have been assembled from various parts by someone who was technically deficient. On the other hand, I'm not sure, but the seller's locality brings up a memory from a previous "zero' seller. I'm probably wrong though.

iphoenix Posted July 3, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted July 3, 2012 Have you tried contacting the seller? Asking some technical questions? The 48 hours Ebay allows for reply has now expired, without response. I asked about conditions of the shutter, range/viewfinder and which frame lines were available in the finder; also, whether or not the camera had been serviced. Beware! (ps: The listing has been reported to Ebay).
doubice Posted July 4, 2012 Share #10 Posted July 4, 2012 I also did not receive a reply to my query about what frames were in the finder and how did the seller know that this was an M4 prototype..... One major improvement of the M4 - the 3-forked film take-up spool is also missing from this camera. I believe this is an overpriced M3 with a modified M2 top plate. Top plates without serial numbers are not that uncommon......... Cheers, Jan

iphoenix Posted July 4, 2012 Author Share #12 Posted July 4, 2012 The point here is that there's NO camera, that's why there are no answers! There is also now no auction. It was still due to run, but despite 1 bid, seems to have vanished into the ether. :D:D
