IWC Doppel Posted June 20, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone know what the silver finish is ? Â My grip is showing a lot of grassing and I was wondering if I might refinish in some way. Perhaps remove with paint stripper and speak to a camera finishers, who might put a harder wearing finish on.
doubice Posted June 20, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted June 20, 2012 If your Thumbs-up is showing a lot of grassing (sic), you must have a really green thumb! Have you considered entering into the gardening business? Â My early black one is wearing through as well, with brass showing. It does not bother me - simple way to fix it would be to strip it, re-spray with black matte or semi-matte automotive paint and bake in an oven for an hour or so. Â I have a silver one on my second M8 and that has not started to wear yet. I believe it is painted, rather than chromed and that is why it is 'grassing' for you. Why not contact Tim Isaac directly, he responds to emails and I am sure will help. Â Cheers, Â Jan
lct Posted June 20, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted June 20, 2012 ...I have a silver one on my second M8 and that has not started to wear yet. I believe it is painted... Yes it is. Mine shows the black primer behind the silver coating. The metal behind the primer is made of silvery alloy so i wouldn't expect brassing to show any brass whatsoever. IWC Doppel Posted June 20, 2012 Author Share #4  Posted June 20, 2012 Thanks, guys  I might even go for the naked grass look and save on paint

IWC Doppel Posted June 21, 2012 Author Share #6  Posted June 21, 2012 For those interested.  I e-mailed Tim from Thumbs Up, you can repaint (removing all paint first) then bake for 20 mins at 160 Deg. I might give it a go  I wonder what brass might look like any way
pico Posted June 21, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted June 21, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Powder paint would be best. It is as durable as you can get. There are plenty of companies that do such work in batches. The Thumbs-up should be batched with jewelry.

rramesh Posted June 26, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted June 26, 2012 Take it to your favorite auto repair shop and have it powder coated.
pico Posted June 26, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted June 26, 2012 Take it to your favorite auto repair shop and have it powder coated. Â No. Read down. Bring it to a place that batches so it goes into the jewelery work flow, otherwise you might get it into a chassis coat. Very unwise.

gjames9142 Posted June 27, 2012 Share #15 Â Posted June 27, 2012 The second thumbs up on my second M9 is starting to brass at the edges after a few weeks. The first -- two years old - is as brassed as the camera itself, where all the writing on the back --delete, iso etc -- has already disappeared. I haven't noticed that it has affected my pictures in any way. The second thumbs up has a slightly different curve/profile than the first and is actually a little bit more comfortable, I am surprised that it took another company to invent this cure for fantom film advance syndrome.
