Fox Cubs at Rest, Work and Play

I was sitting reading a book and listening to Rigoletto from the Met at around 9PM in my house in France this evening (footie on the TV), when I noticed some movement out of the corner of my eye. I looked round, expecting to see our neighbour's cat, Madame Marmalade, who will sometimes call in for a late night snack. I was astonished to see two fox cubs looking in through one of my windows. As soon as I moved, one ran away but the other was a modelling natural and posed for me for the next five minutes. It was so relaxed, it looked as if it was going to go to sleep on the terrace, which was still warm from the evening sun.

Taken with an M9, 135 Tele-Elmar and SF58D flash.

I am just watching the same pair of cubs this morning from my bedroom window. They are trying to work out how to get a drink out of the swimming pool. It is an old style pool with the water level about 25cm below the edge and they just cannot reach. I am waiting for one to fall in and I will have to go and rescue it with the leaves removal net.

PS Just went to get my M9 to take a photo, put the 135 T-E on only to see one of the cubs had managed to find the steps, tasted the water and rushed off. The pool was only opened up yesterday morning and as usual after the winter, it looked a bit like pea soup. Monsieur pisciniste had therefore put a load of hydrogen peroxide in it to release the bound chlorine into useful free chlorine. I don't imagine therefore it tasted very nice. W

Great little animals, good to see them so relaxed & happy. Enjoy!

Stephen,

If this was in the UK, where we keep chickens, my reactions to Masters Foxy-Woxy would be somewhat different.

Nice photos, I love the first one in particular. I wonder what happened to the mother?

I can still hear the mother or at least a vixen in the near vicinity. She may well have a new mate and have kicked out the adolescent cubs from the previous litter.

I have foxes in my area too but they are very rarely seen. In the decade I've lived here, I've only seen glimpses of the foxes from a distance maybe about 4 or 5 times in total and only in the very early hours of the morning when the neighbourhood is asleep.

In England, foxes are very common. We often see them in our garden, circling round the chicken run like a bunch of Indians round a wagon train. In spring, we would hear foxes every night. The vixens scream and it is a very eerie sound:
