Hartmonstr Posted March 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just returned from a four day ski vacation (or holiday, to those of you east of the Puddle) in northern Minnesota. Not exactly the ski capital of the world, but a very nice four-mountain (OK, four-hill) area well serviced with lifts including the Midwest's only gondola - no lines anywhere. And great ski conditions. I put the neck strap on the M8 and hung it under my coat the entire time on the hills. It's small enough to fit comfortably, and access for quick photos was easy. My son made several comments about looking a bit overweight, but it's just a camera, right? I also took the camera out at night and am continuing to be impressed with its low light capabilities using the 50 'Lux and 28 'Cron. So far, no problems, issues, hangups, reflections, battery glitches, streaking, etc. and no complaints form this user. The first image is a Photomerge composite of seven images, taken hand-held off the balcony of our townhouse at the ski resort with the 28mm at f/8. I forgot to use manual exposure (a must with panos) but it still turned out with only the slightest of exposure variation from image to image. Good enough for the snapshot album, anyway. BTW, even with the inevitable cropping from a handheld panoramic image, this file is 10" X 35" @300ppi, uninterpolated. The second image is a 100% crop of the building on the right (had to squish it a bit in ImageReady to make it fit the Forum's filesize rules) - a pretty darn tight lens. John Welcome, dear visitor! Michael-IIIf Posted March 7, 2007 Share #11 Posted March 7, 2007 I gave up skiing with my D2 after falling on it a few times too many. Boy it hurts. I can only imagine what an unforgiving lump an M must be to fall on. I knew it was only a matter of time before it, or my ribs, were broken. Yes I know you can put it in a backpack, I tried that too, but once in there that's where it stayed all day long. My ski camera now is [hush] my cell phone. AlanG Posted March 8, 2007 Share #16 Posted March 8, 2007 OK I was in the Dolomites a month ago too. I did the Sellaronda circuit one day so I went through Val Gardena. Also to Marmallada, Crystalla, Passo Falzarego etc. etc. I loved skiing there, but the snow is much much better in the Western US. - Powder!!! You can fall on it with your Leicas. xrogers Posted March 8, 2007 Share #18 Posted March 8, 2007 And now, back to Minnesota, last Thursday near the beginning of a snowstorm. It really started to come down later on, and the kids finally had a snow day Friday. M8, 35 Lux Asph Welcome, dear visitor! M8, 35 Lux Asph The M8 handled cold, driven wet snow, driven dry snow, and me falling on it (at least it was in a small bag) when I did a power face plant while nordic skiing too aggressively (hey, skiing, I'm on topic!). The M8 is an excellent snow camera---I've been able to bring in textured highlights in snow without losing the shadows. Here's another from the following day.
