A new Record at Westlicht!

Recommended Posts

Stuka lens hood made €26,400 (Lot 86)

Other unexpectedly high prices:

Lot 123 Leica M3 (MP conversion by Leica) €132,000

Lot 168 Leitz 35/1.4 M lens €72,000 ... must be something very special about this?

Recession has not affected Leica collectables' prices

Takes one's breath away. I suspect it's recession-connected. Investment money looking for a place that avoids today's shaky investments as well as government taxation. Think about it. If you had 2m Euro to invest, better in this set or in Greek Treasury bonds?

I don't think I'll be parting with my Leica 'O' Series just yet ... they seem to be a good investment.

How will you afford the insurance premiums on yours now? It looks to be in much better condition than the one that fetched £2M or am I missing something?

The page lnked here by Pete to a less than 6 years old article (also from BBC.CO.UK) shows imo how Leica marketing has evolved in this period, compared to Leica technology.

Look at the latest inovative Leica  next to Canicon's evolution from 6 years ago, when HD video (not to mention RAW format video or 4K video) was nonexistent all the way to their latest product line.

BBC NEWS | UK | Magazine | Camera obscurer?

(This for the confines of the Bar only, where the daily use to Leica talk is habitual.

But probably not memory-blurring for photographers and other long-timers).

"Three grant to you guv - the new M8 "

:D

Morgan cars' and Harley-Davidson motocycles' sales philosophy applied to digital cameras :(

Porsche and Piech might be even better as a study-case, remember Lopez ;) ?.

Absolutely nothing against great marketing, but L should continue to find and train world class engineers, too. I'll look up the Wetzlar directory a year from now, see if a sushi restaurant opened there.

Take a closer look at the serial number in that picture. All is not what it seems. Then have a look at Lot 2 at the recent Westlicht Auction. ;)

edit: when I say "a closer look at" I mean "a closer look around"

I find this highly ironic. I wonder if Oskar Barnack ever expected a simple camera like this would be worth so much money?

I also wonder if he ever expected that his innovation would lead to a modern day corporation who actually believes that $10,000 lenses and $7,000 bodies benefit photography?

Agree, this unpredictable destiny seems to be common even in other fields: during his lifetime Van Gogh was never famous as a painter and struggled to make a living as an artist :).

cheers.
