Leica M - New styling cues

Holy cr@p, I hadn't noticed that there is no hot shoe on this camera!!!

Talk about style over function. I realize these cameras will never see the light of day, so it doesn't matter anyway, but why would Leica be proud of this?

Walter de'Silva will probably next design a car with no doors or headlights.

Leica said that the hot shoe and preview leather were dropped because of design reasons for this specific camera. I would not be surprised, however, iif the disappearance of the preview lever is a pointer to future models. The hotshoe, I am sure, cannot be missed, if anything it will gain more importance.

Jaap, I hadn't paid too much attention to this camera, as I figured it was just a bling job, but I now see that Walter de'Silva is the anti-Christ. Why not just take away the battery and SD card slot while they're at it? I can just hear Mr. de'Silva now; "Oh, the LCD must go. What a horrible little TV!!!".

We can talk about future models all day long, but this is May 2012 and this is still an M9, albeit one which cannot frame lenses wider than 28mm and cannot preview different focal lengths. Sure, the M10 will possibly (probably) have a strap on EVF, but that day is not today.

I can only hope that there is at least one person inside Leica who thought this an idiotic bastardization of a wonderful camera.

When a camera ships with a pair of thick white gloves.... you know there is a problem. But judging from those Saudi Sheiks who were checking it out on opening night, Berlin: the problem will not be with Leica's bottom line.

Leica leads the way! The hot shoe is quite unnecessary - real Leica photographers should never use flash, and they don't need viewfinders or frame lines to visualise the field of view of any given lens.

Those are crutches for the inexperienced and have no place on a tool built for masters!

But where will I put my thumbs up ?

Actually what it requires is a high-tech rubber band around the middle, where you can stick 1000 EUR bills.

I hope they create usability with the new iteration of camera that enables use with a supposed external EVF white still maintaining use of a hotshoe or flash sync terminal.

Actually, I would bet the form factor for the M10 is based on the M9 Titanium/Hermes edition, but retains a hot shoe. It just seems clear they like the Audi look...

I imagine the fact that the MMonochrom is not called the M9M means that it will continue to run in parallel with the M10, and that in turn suggests to me that there will not be any significant change in appearance with the M10.

I suppose that if the M10 or its successor has a EVF it will go through an evolutionary phase of having a clip-on which diehard purists would have the option of leaving off. My experience of a clip-on EVF with the Ricoh GXR with A12 M mount is that while they are excellent when using long Leica lenses and for macro work having a detachable object stuck on the hot shoe makes the use of camera cases difficult and is awkward when stowing or removing the camera from a bag. I would really prefer a built in EVF.

Fitting a built in EVF into the existing M body design would present considerable problems though Sony have demonstrated that it is possible to make a built in EVF small enough in the NEX 7.

The thing is a lot existing M users don't want an EVF. So having a clip on is probably a good intermediary tool for introducing new users while keeping the disgruntled current users more accepting of the change.

I only want an evf if I'm completely unaware of it being there. I would be satisfied if it were there as a 'tool' though and have the option of taking it off when I don't need it. Which is probably often.
