OMG, some of the last few (angry) posts are a good reminder of why I do not read forums too often anymore :D

The questionnaire at he beginning omitted the following two options or choices:

  1. I own one (or two) and I am very happy with it, I use it mostly to make photographs
  2. I own one but I will have to (sell it soon) or (return it) for whatever (personal) reason...

I choose #1 (happy), thank you Leica.

Why would I buy a digital black and white camera when I could use my film Leica with a variety of outstanding black and white films?

Any digital camera will, by definition, be replaced relatively shortly by another new digital camera.

After at first considering the Monochrome to be a fetish item, I now consider it as not required equipment.

Interesting thought. I was thinking of trading in my M9 for an MM and using my M6 and M4 for color. The 800 ISO film is good enough and how often do you need infinite high ISO for color as opposed to black and white? Am I wrong?

Why ride in a car when you can perfectly get there by riding a horse... any horse?!

Any automobile will, by definition, be replaced relatively shortly by a newer one...

Why would I buy a digital black and white camera when I could use my film Leica with a variety of outstanding black and white films?

Because you are buying more than one camera with a Mononchrom.

Ignoring for the time being the subtleties of each camera system, you are buying

a) a camera capable of the same image quality as large format film, 4x5 for instance, so you can be Ansel Adams for the day.

B) a camera where the image can be cropped and still retain the same image quality as medium format, so you can be Irving Penn for the day.

c) and you are buying a 35mm camera where you can add as much or as little grain in post processing to replicate your favourite Tri-X processed ten different ways, so you can be Sebastaio Salgado for the day.

It really means you can make one exposure and with forethought about exposure and composition and final treatment its possible to turn one camera into many.

I started looking at the Monochrom (my first digicam) when my stock of TMZ started running out. I never really warmed up to Delta 3200. It takes amazing pictures at even higher ISOs than I could squeeze out of TMZ.

A little while back I posted about the view-camera look of the MM, and got some rather rude and disdainful responses. But I have a 40-inch print at my gallery in Vancouver and showed it to a colleague who does reproduction work shooting transparencies on an 11x14 Deardorff -- his response was "looks like 8x10." If you get it right, it is a remarkable camera, and I actually prefer my Emarit 28 v4 to my 28 Summicron.

"a) a camera capable of the same image quality as large format film, 4x5 for instance, so you can be Ansel Adams for the day."

With respect, that is nonsense.

What aspect is nonsense, with respect? The quality of the camera or trying to put some spirit and imagination into the discussion?

I use 4x5 and my MM with equal enthusiasm. Each is good at different aspects of a task, but I don't feel one produces pictures that are fundamentally superior to the other. In fact, and importantly for me, they can both be processed to look very much alike, so a body of work has a consistent quality to it while still using each camera in the situations where one or other has the advantage of handling.

I don`t know. Would need to see files from M9 or 240 converted to mono compared to MM taken at same time same place same lens printed to same size, say A3 or A4.

I really do not see much point in showing a 30x sample which I assume is better.

Filters will show on the whole file with MM. With color digi, select areas is easier.

I think it is too much of a specialty camera for most users.

Being at first reluctant, I bought it one week after borrowing one from a friend.

Unbelievable what this tool can offer!

And now I quote 01af: Agfapan 25, Plus X, Tri X and 3200 simultaneously!

It opens a whole world of possibilities. A step forward, I would dare comparing it with the introduction of the Leica in the 20's. Let's remember that nearly nobody gave a cent for that camera in those years, only open minded individuals (Kertesz et al.) considered it seriously.

My MM is my M6 always loaded with black and white film. Sure it may not appeal to some but it sure does to me.

My MM is an M6 loaded with and endless roll EVERY KIND of B&W medium format film with free instant developing for life.

I have never enjoyed any camera as much as I have my M Monochrom. It is simply the very best camera I have ever used for black and white photography, film or digital, 35mm or medium format. I am saving for a second one, just in case.

Definitely not!

Lenses don't need to sacrifice their ability to transmit colours in order to become sharper ... actually, the contrary is true, as sharper lenses also give more accurate colours.

I think you may have miss understood me. I think it's important for both the sensor and lens to be of high quality for a better end result.

The MM is a great idea, and I would love to own a B&W dedicated camera that takes my Leica lenses.

There are, however, reservations. I would rather have the updated viewfinder in the M240. I am concerned as to how long the sensor will be supported and serviceable. I do not want the pitiful small, cheapo screen on the back, but rather the one the M240 comes with, and I do not want the short battery life.

When these are updated and the price sinks by a thousand pounds, I'll buy.

well the price may or may not fall when the bw version of the m240 is eventually announced, this year or next. that new bw camera/computer will have similar issues of longevity. then again, by my calculation, using $ and nyc prices, the crossover for the mm occurs at around 235 rolls -- leaving aside the film vs digital iq debate. how much do you shoot?

Don't take this the wrong way :- I wouldn't be at all interested in a M 240 Monochrom.

I hate the idea of video and live view in the M and love the Monochrom precisely because it doesn't have any features of the M240.

I couldn't agree more! Using my Monochrom is as close as I get to using my M4 and M6 but with all the benefits of Neopan100, Plus-X, Tri-X, Neopan400, Delta3200, etc., etc., all available for any shot.

The perfect camera [if you aren't interested in colour and don't worry about tables comparing features, etc.]
