ymc226 Posted April 23, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted April 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am going to replace the Griptac on my 2 black MP's with leather from Morgan Sparks. Â I'm going back and forth between Black Beauty and Restoration Black. On the website pictures, the BB looks to have a deeper black but I'm not sure if this is just the lighting. Does anyone know? Â Though it is a purely personal preference, which would you pick?
Advertisement Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Hi ymc226, Take a look here Cameraleather: black beauty vs restoration black. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 23, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted April 23, 2012 I had Black Beauty on an M8 once and did not like it. It was too thick with brown edges. I replaced it with grey Kid leather which looks fantastic on a chrome camera. After a couple of changes that camera is now Slate Blue which I can also thouroughly recommend. ymc226 Posted April 23, 2012 Author Share #3 Â Posted April 23, 2012 Thanks jaapv, Â The fact that the Black Beauty was thick and had brown edges is a concern. Â Someone reminded me to consider Aki Asahi as well. I wanted to get as close to the "vulcanite" substitue provided by Leica but don't want to pay their high prices. Â Looking at the Aki Asahi #4034, it looks to be a close enough match for me. I'm going to give this a try.
kdemas Posted April 23, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted April 23, 2012 I just ordered the #4034 for my M8. I'll let you know what I think of it once it arrives.
doubice Posted April 23, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted April 23, 2012 Yes, the 4034 from Aki Asahi is the closest in appearance to the original M vulcanite. I went through a similar dilemma with my second M8 and decided on black Griptac - am very happy. I don't recall what I used to recover the first M8 - will have to check when home. Initially, I was a tad apprehensive about ordering the Griptac but, once installed, it gives the camera a superb feel. Â Best, Â Jan
