piblondin Posted April 22, 2012 Author Share #21 Â Posted April 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did some more tests on a tripod today and it definitely appears that the lens is backfocusing in certain situations. It becomes more pronounced as I move further from my subject or stop down the aperture. With that said, this lens is phenomenal when it's in focus. Can I expect to me able to focus accurately and all distances and apertures with the 35 FLE if I send it in for an adjustment? Â Thanks!
Advertisement Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Hi piblondin, Take a look here Is this acceptable sharpness for 35 Summilux ASPH FLE on M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bpalme Posted April 22, 2012 Share #22 Â Posted April 22, 2012 Did you try other lenses to make sure it's not the rangefinder?

piblondin Posted April 22, 2012 Author Share #24 Â Posted April 22, 2012 Did you try other lenses to make sure it's not the rangefinder? Â I tried my current version 50mm Summicron, which is spot-on.
250swb Posted April 22, 2012 Share #25 Â Posted April 22, 2012 Or both your rangefinder and your Summicron are wrong and simply cancel each other out. A long shot perhaps, but say the camera and lens were second hand you don't know what adjustments the previous owner had done on an ad hoc basis. I think on this occasion you need to established a datum point and send the body and lenses off to Leica so each can be adjusted if necessary. lct Posted April 22, 2012 Share #26 Â Posted April 22, 2012 If you have only two lenses i would send them both and the body in for adjustment.
insomnia Posted April 22, 2012 Share #27 Â Posted April 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wonder why the file size is only at about 2MB. When I develop a M9 DNG from LR4 it goes up to 20MB (sharpness default at 25, quality at export 100/100). I think the file should look better if exported differently. Just a hint, that wouldn't solve your impression 35 vs. 50 however. Â But I also think that it's hard to compare different focal lengths when it comes to sharpness (without test chart), with a wider angle I tend to think "there's got to be more in there!", but as my Elmar 24 is the sharper lens over the 50 Summilux ASPH that is subjective. Â If you have odd behaviour at intermediate distances it implies the floating element is maladjusted.
jaapv Posted April 22, 2012 Share #29 Â Posted April 22, 2012 The FLE lens has far better behavior regarding focus shift, but it is not eliminated 100%. It will not be visible in photographic use of the lens. However, extreme pixelpeepers can still demonstrate it.
piblondin Posted April 22, 2012 Author Share #30 Â Posted April 22, 2012 If you have odd behaviour at intermediate distances it implies the floating element is maladjusted. Â That sounds like what's happening. Focus at very close distances at 1.4 seems to be on, but at further distances, there is significant back focus.
