Somewhat OT: Why Japanese Foundry Can't Manufacture ZM 85mm Sonnar

Erwin Puts reviewed the 85 f2 ZM Sonnar, comparing it to the 75 & 90 Apo-Summicrons and the 85mm f1.2 Canon lens. Unfortunately he has revised his website and I can no longer find the report to provide a link to. Essentially the 85 Sonnar compared favorably with the Apo-Summicrons, which were all somewhat better than the Canon. I think the low demand for the Sonnar was due to its price - not much less than either Apo-Summicron. Unless you really liked the Zeiss "look" one would go for the Leica offerings.

Thanks Jaap,

I've had my eye on this lens for a while but have not been able to get any information on it's performance. Can you provide any more?

It has a nice 'rounded' look but with fine detail, I am not wowed by the build quality! It seems closer to 75mm focal length than 90mm. When I first got mine it was mis-focussing, my repairer said that an element needed reseated...

I just asked Popflash and apparently the 2/85 is no longer being offered. The 4/85 sells for $860, which must be good value for someone who can live with f4. Jaap maintains it is comparable in performance to the Elmarit-M 90.

For a focal length I use intermittently I can easily live with f4.0 especially when its a 4.0/90 Macro-Elmar: extraordinary IQ, ergonomics and compactness.

Having said that I have just bought an immaculate, unused, cheap 4.0/85 Tele-Tessar with original hood.

To me the build quality of this lens, and all of the ZM lenses for that matter, seems excellent.

Fantastic on the Monochrom.

I had a similar problem with my Sonnar. Sold it.
