New Leica Cameras = New Forum Sections?

I don’t think we need a poll tTis forum is not run on the basis of government by committee...It is Andreas’ creation and we are here because we like it the way it is.

Steve, I think you're right on!

I also had post with some new ideas for the forum earlier this year, but had very little response. I think the forum does need renewal and revision, if not a radical overhaul. Already it is looking outdated, and members will move on if they don't find it stimulating enough.

A lens forum is obvious and there have been numerous calls for one.

"Digital" now looks outmoded. Digital M perhaps?

And how about a Leica compact sub-forum?

These would just really be tweaks. Perhaps what's needed at this stage is a poll?

Not picking on you, David, you've just supplied the words.

One of the things that constantly irritates me about the modern world we live in is the ever-increasing frequency of change. Too often I come across things that have been changed just for the sake of that change or just because they've been a certain way for awhile.

For a real world example, when I go to the supermarket I have a mental list of what I need to buy and I know where to find it. But evermore frequently I find that I go to the place on the aisle to get, say, mayonnaise only to find that it's not there because the supermarket has moved everything round to make me hunt for it and hopefully have a eureka moment where I suddenly realise that I'm walking passed the nappies selection and - "Of course!" - I want to buy nappies although I don't know any infants or parents with infants. These things have not been moved for my, the customers, benefit but to 'freshen' things up and sell more stuff. I won't describe the intense irritation that inflicts on me.

Another example is work; for no apparent reason those who are in charge of such things decide to restructure every two or three years and move all the groups around, change their names and change what they do so that you no longer know who does what anymore or where to find them and it's only when you've established new links and ways of working that they do it all again for no palpable benefit.

Andreas has set the forum up in one way and it appears to work - if it didn't the forum wouldn't have 71,919 registered members - so my view is that we should respect Andreas wishes and his time because it would be his time taken in making any changes. There's also the view that while maybe 50 members calling for change 71,869 are not. I would have expected that Leica owners are largely creatures of habit what with the M being essentially unchanged for decades while its popularity endures.

The house works with the furniture where it is in my view so I say leave it as it is.:)

Pete.

Steve only raised the possibility of very minor changes, a couple of new sub fora, nothing radical. A lens forum, for example. It would just seem logical. Surely members are permitted to raise the possibility of modest changes? Time to say goodnight from this side of the planet.

We're lucky to have what we have. Andreas breaks his butt to keep this thing alive and properly functioning. My vote is to let him continue and be happy for what we get!! (If you can do better, start a new one.)

Nobody here is criticizing Andreas’ work, or suggesting we could do it better. It is just that some change is inevitable (the introduction of an M10 would require a subforum dedicated to the new model) and we may soon reach the point where a slightly more extensive restructuring would be beneficial as it could reduce the number of changes necessary in the long run. But that is for Andreas to decide; we can only offer suggestions.

Great suggestions BTW...

I just returned from a short Easter vacation and browsed through your ideas.

As some of you already pointed out I have to juggle with several aspects - of which the user satisfaction is the most important, but Google is also very important and how a structure can develop logically in the long run.

I agree that sooner or later I'll have to re-arrange the forums. Thus I'm interested in your input - but the process of developing a real structure and a final decision (which not everybody will like) will take some time.

Thanks Andreas for your response! I believe the people who have posted here have the same goal, to make the forum as enjoyable and educational an experience as possible for as many as possible. It obviously isn't possible to run a forum by committee, or LUF would be fractured into hundreds of sub-forums, but I trust that you will find a balance that works for all, as you have done in the past.

Cheers, and thanks again.

With the distinct possibility that there will be several new cameras announced next month I suppose the idea of introducing new sub-Forums for the M10, X2, MP-B or whatever they will be called, is being, or will be, considered by Andreas and or others. I would like to offer a suggestion.

Instead of fracturing the forum into many sub-groups I would recommend the following:

News:

About:

Customer Forum:

Lens Forum: M Mount Lenses, S Mount Lenses, Other

Digital Forum: M Digital, S Digital, Other

Film Forum:

and all the others...

I especially like the Lens Forum idea since most erroneous posts seem to be primarily about lenses.

Very good idea. Just a suggestion if the admin will re-arrange the forum one day - I think here is a forum for all the newer compact cameras missing: D-Lux and V-Lux. Would be good especially for Newcomers to share their experiences and question in a special sub-forum for Leica compact cameras with other users of that special camera class.

I think we need a "hateful tossers & random excited ramblings" section.

I will be happy to lurk there, so as not to excite the more sophisticated members among us (OK, OK - who is "us"??). A sort of anti-bar, but I am still struggling for a name, the "Hektor dungeon" perhaps??

It is designated for the unwanted dogs.

We also need a Bokeh forum.

I have a question about the MM Forum. I am not sure where it belongs. It has properties with both film cameras and digital cameras. It will use filters in a similar manner as film, does not have WB, since it's monochrome cannot have many of the normal issues that the M8/9 have, but it does have a sensor. So where does it belong?

It probably belongs in the M9 forum, or the Digital forum.

If new sub-forums are ever created, we will move stuff around to suit

It's good that it's flexible. However IMHO if the MM belongs in the M9 forum, then we should combine all Digital M's into one forum... It is as different as the M8 from the M9... Perhaps more, since filters are intentional rather than accidental, and the M8 and M9 have WB... the MM does not.
