billib Posted March 25, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 25, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) On a good day I'll venture out with a tripod. On a lousy day It'll be a monopod. With increasing regularity I've needed my wheelchair. Well, wheelchairs and tripods (and to a lesser extent monopods) don't mix. Whats a guy to do? Advertisement Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Hi billib, Take a look here Camera Mount for a Wheelchair??????. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Paul Verrips Posted March 25, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 25, 2012 Looks very ingenious! But can you change camera position quick enough or is it easier to change the position of the wheelchair?
billib Posted March 25, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted March 25, 2012 Both, the camera position is usually easier though. Wheelchair postion is a rough adjustment and Camera position is a fine one.

jlindstrom Posted March 26, 2012 Share #10 Posted March 26, 2012 Impressive setup. Most likely much more stable than most of the flimsy and cheap tripods ppl use! But, what really impresses me the most is the man in the chair. It's great to see one not getting beat down by misfortune, but rather step up their "game" and make the most of it. Happy shooting billib! //Juha

billib Posted March 26, 2012 Author Share #12 Posted March 26, 2012 Thank you, BTW I was very impressed with the quality, with and breath of your new Noctilux article. You'll need to add the SLR Magic to it when they become available.

peterv Posted March 26, 2012 Share #15 Posted March 26, 2012 Hi Bill, nice set up. I'm kind of in the same boat so to speak (SCI C6) and I tried the same set up with the magic arm and superclamp but it didn't work for me because the rig was just too unstable and wobbly. I'm still thinking about a stabilization system that'll work for me. Perhaps a monopod that I can attach to the little plate for my feet would do, I haven't tried it yet because I feel it would be too difficult for me to change the length of the monopod since my hands are paralyzed too. Perhaps for you this would be an option to look at. Looking at what kind of wheelchair you use it think you can do your own transfers and perhaps (I hope) you still have the usage of your hands so a monopod might be another option for you. Anyway, good to see a fellow wheelchair user continuing to shoot.
billib Posted March 26, 2012 Author Share #16 Posted March 26, 2012 Peter, I do use monopods on occasion. I have several different types. On a good day a monopod works fine but on a bad day, I need the chair. What about the Magic Arm didn't work? My setup is very stable. I'm thinking of using a longer bolt with a spring for the knob at the elbow. That way the tension can be adjusted so I can place the arm with camera in any position I want and it'll stay. It won't be necessary to tighten it down in order to make it stay in the position in which it was left. I need to experiment with that a bit but it looks promising. The Super Clamp tightens enough on the Wheelchair frame so the Magic Arm stays put. Just look at the pictures. Describe in detail how your Magic Arm setup didn't work and maybe I can help. jaapv Posted March 26, 2012 Share #19 Posted March 26, 2012 I guess this rig by Really Right Stuff (albeit utterly useless for wildlife photography) would be a similar useful thing for this application. Okavango Delta: Safari Rig - YouTube

I have one of their amazing tripod and head combos which is made of Carbon fiber so its very very light. Because I like how light the Carbon Fiber tripod is I had bought several Feisol Carbon Fiber monopods with the intention of cannibalizing them in order to swop out the Magic Arms metal arms for the Feisol's Carbon Fiber shafts in order to make the very heavy Magic Arm lighter. Haven't done it yet. I need to build up my courage a bit.
