Edward77 Posted March 21, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 21, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Spent a few hours in Mayfair today and I still don't know what to get. I wanted a Black M9 (waiting list) - They do have a M9-P however bye bye £400!! They have a 35 lux which was a pleasant surprise but after spending a few hours with Brett I think I should start out with a 50 rather than a 35. My father has a 50 Cron which is isn't using currently so maybe spending the dosh on a 50 is a waste unless it's a 0.95 which I can't get due to the waiting list. Should I go 24 and use my fathers 50 or 35 lux?
Advertisement Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Hi Edward77, Take a look here So Confused as to which lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted March 21, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 21, 2012 Edward, what a dilemma! I can't believe the 35mm will remain available to you at Mayfair for long! Frankly your choice depends very much on your most favoured photographic subjects. Presumably this will not be your very first camera and lens? If so, does your own experience point clearly to a 35 or 50 as first choice? My choice is irrelevant to your dilemma. So will any other forum member's choice. Do a quick analysis of your own past work and then be decisive.
Edward77 Posted March 21, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted March 21, 2012 I have been using a Canon 18-55. I use it at all lengths.
IkarusJohn Posted March 21, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 21, 2012 Hi Edward, If you have the use of your father's 50 Summicron, I'd grab the 35 Summilux while you can - it is hard to get and it is a very fine lens. You then have a 35 you can keep for the long term, and you can use the 50 while you consider what next. You may stop there, or you might find you use the 35 more, in which case you might consider a 75 or 90 to compliment your 35. Alternatively, you may find that the 50 suits you more, in which case you could look at a 21 or 24 as a next lens. If you buy a 50, you're not really ahead. My base kit (i.e., what I will take with me to Germany this year) is 21, 35, 50, 75 - all Summiluxes, apart from the Noct. Yes, I need to start doing some weight lifting! For every day wandering (to and from work etc), the 50 is on my camera, and a 28 is in a wrap in my pocket. I hope this helps. Cheers John
250swb Posted March 21, 2012 Share #5 Posted March 21, 2012 If you can't decide to get a 35mm Summilux, or wait for a 50mm Noctilux then just walk away. The Noctilux is a specialist lens, the 35mm Summilux is a great day to day lens, although if you want a smaller lens the 35mm Summicron is an alternative. A 24mm lens would mean an external viewfinder, and as you seem to be a novice I would advise against that avenue, at least to start with. Only you know the types of focal length you like, but if I had the money to throw at the problem I would use your fathers 50mm Summicron and buy a 35mm Summilux. Then just use them. Come to some sort of conclusion about which direction to go. If you want to upgrade your 50 how about a 50mm Summilux, much more usable, much smaller than a Noctilux. JPizzzle Posted March 21, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 21, 2012 Although I own the 50 lux and absolutely love it-in your shoes I would take the 35 lux and use your father's 50 cron. However, if I had the choice between the 50 lux and 35 lux (without owning another in the same focal length) I would choose the 50. The Bokeh of the 50 lux is outstanding-if bokeh is your thing. I feel the the 50 nocti is very specialized and heavy-and personally would not consider it in my choices-but this is based on my needs...
Edward77 Posted March 21, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted March 21, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you. I'll take the 35 Lux tomorrow then.
JPizzzle Posted March 21, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 21, 2012 great choice-I would call and let them know to put it aside for you-since as some have said here-these don't last long at retail price-also you posted this on a public forum, which may lead some to try to grab it for themselves. Looking forward to you impression! JP
stonearabiapix Posted March 21, 2012 Share #9 Posted March 21, 2012 Edward, the answer is in your meta-data. Go through all your pix from the canon lens and see what focal length you have been using. Look again and see which are your favorites, that is your answer.
Lord Fluff Posted March 22, 2012 Share #10 Posted March 22, 2012 My choice is irrelevant to your dilemma. So will any other forum member's choice. Do a quick analysis of your own past work and then be decisive. +1 Or...... Do you tend towards single subjects (50) or multiple (35)? Do you like detail (50) or context (35)? Do you like a lot of space around your frame lines (50) or a little (35)? Do you even know you like working with a rangefinder camera? That last one might be worth pondering before you drop 9 thousand quid on a body and a lens. Unless you are keen to spend the cash, I'd look at a used M8 at around 1500 quid paired with your Summicron, have a good play and see if you enjoy it as a picture taking tool. philipus Posted March 22, 2012 Share #11 Posted March 22, 2012 I wanted a Black M9 (waiting list) - They do have a M9-P however bye bye £400!!(...) so maybe spending the dosh on a 50 is a waste unless it's a 0.95 which I can't get due to the waiting list. Forgive me - and I realise everyone's different and I respect that - but if you're seriously considering the 0.95 £400 seems like peanuts. Again, my apologies in case I'm overstepping a line here. Back to the question - this is a good piece of advice: If you have the use of your father's 50 Summicron, I'd grab the 35 Summilux while you can - it is hard to get and it is a very fine lens. You then have a 35 you can keep for the long term, and you can use the 50 while you consider what next ...as is this: The Noctilux is a specialist lens, the 35mm Summilux is a great day to day lens, although if you want a smaller lens the 35mm Summicron is an alternative. A 24mm lens would mean an external viewfinder, and as you seem to be a novice I would advise against that avenue, at least to start with. Not having used the Noctilux but having read quite a bit about it (how can one avoid to when it's so often discussed?), I am 100% certain that I will never get one as long as I have the 50 asph. This is an absolutely outstanding lens and one which I - were I in your shoes - would consider getting even if I had access to a 50/2. It is staggeringly good (and incidentally the one lens in my 2,8cm, 35, 50, 90 and 135 line-up that I used the most during a recent trip).

IWC Doppel Posted March 22, 2012 Share #15 Posted March 22, 2012 If you like the rendering of the 35 lux, I think you'll really get on with the 50 lux, the Nocti is special in every way, but youd be a brave man to look at this as your every day 50mm
bpalme Posted March 22, 2012 Share #16 Posted March 22, 2012 Congrats.. It took me almost a year to get a 50 Summilux and I've been waiting for the 35mm FLE since October.. Should get it in a week or two. So consider yourself lucky. Also I wanted the chrome M9P but couldn't find one so went with the regular M9. I think maybe they finished a huge batch of 35mm FLE because my dealer got 3 this month and went a couple months with zero.

IkarusJohn Posted March 22, 2012 Share #20 Posted March 22, 2012 Now the fun begins! One word of advice - Thorsten Overgaard has some excellent advice on starting out and setting up the menus on p13 of his M9 review - leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica M9 Digital Rangefinder Camera - Page 13: "Learning the simplicity of the Leica M9" I don't agree with it all, but it's a very good starting point. For me, the M9 makes me pause and think, which is a good thing. Anticipating the shot, choosing the right angle and field of view, selecting aperture and focusing. Take lots of pictures to get used to your camera, and think about what you're doing, and post here! Well done! John
