ALD Posted March 1, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Folks I have an M8 and the LEDS visible in the viewfinder display very blurry or doubled. I have tried testing this on several people and they all report its blurry when they look through the viewfinder. What is this problem ? How is it fixed? What caused it? How much does it cost? Does anyone know of a link where i can read about it? What does a general service of the camera cost? Kind regards A

jaapv Posted March 1, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 1, 2012 It probably means they have worked loose. A general service - the price depends on the problems found. So you will have to send your camera in to Leica for an estimate.
ALD Posted March 1, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted March 1, 2012 It begins to be a question of economics now, because if I must pay 1000 Euros to get a camera fixed that has a minor problem it becomes a question of wether it is worth it for the poor half sensor. I would like to see Leica upgrade the m8 sensor to full frame and then it could be worthwhile. Theoretically the body is the same as the m9 and the innards are different
jaapv Posted March 1, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 1, 2012 And it will never happen. The only upgrade to full frame is to buy an M9.
hoppyman Posted March 1, 2012 Share #5 Posted March 1, 2012 When you look through the viewfinder are the frame lines sharp when the LED display is blurry? How about the viewfinder image itself? This may be a vision limitation rather than a fault peculiar to the LED display. I don't know of course if your camera does have a fault. If so, your 1000 EURO guess to fix it seems pretty extreme 'Poor half sensor' seems pretty tough as well! Definitely it would be economically completely impractical to transplant the innards of an M9 to an M8.
jaapv Posted March 2, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 2, 2012 Not difficult to do, Geoff. Just replace: Leatherette , top plate, bodyshells, viewfinder, all electronic circuits, oh- and the motherboard/sensor assembly...

OH.... then you take all that leatherette, top plate, and etcetera, give it a good refurb and assemble it back into the M8 it was before. Easy Breezie! Someone somewhere would love to buy it. R. WestMichigan Posted March 3, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 3, 2012 Hi there Hoppy, I suspect the original poster has ruled out the blurriness being a peculiarity in his own vision. He reports having had several people give it a look-see and all report similar blurriness. I suspect the camera does need a visit with a qualified technician for a look-see to resolve the issue. I do agree with you, though, that 'poor half sensor' is a pretty tough appelation to lay on the M8. I'd buy into 'Faulty Undersized Sensor', but my math doesn't quite stretch to 1.3 crop being half the area of 1:1 Crop and the sensor wasn't horrible considering it's era.* Richard in Michigan (*As always: ymmv, not valid in ca., not a flotation device, lsmft, imho, etc) When you look through the viewfinder are the frame lines sharp when the LED display is blurry? jip Posted March 31, 2012 Share #9 Posted March 31, 2012 My M8's display is in the viewfinder is a little blurry on the top right digit... not really bad at all since I don't need the digits just the arrows and the dot. But here its not really blur its more like as if it 'stars' because of some glass with liquid on it is in front of it. Like its sharp but looks weird... kinda hard to explain. But no problem to me, My M8 is second hand, but from the outside it looks completely new, and the sensor has been cleaned. And only had 8k shutter actuations. serial number 32015xx

WestMichigan Posted March 31, 2012 Share #11 Posted March 31, 2012 I have no answers and explano's. I could make a couple of terrifying hypotheses if you'd like, but they'd just be wild guesses padded with big words, technical terms, and frightening implications. I presume You'll take a Pass on That :-D I definitely think the only route to getting rid of it is to have a qualified tech give it a look-n-see. Richard W.
